The Mijas Town Council continues its mosquito control efforts that can transmit the Nile virus. This Tuesday, the area around the Hipódromo was inspected alongside technicians from the Junta, with no cases reported in people.
The Mijas Health Department conducted a new inspection of the traps around the Hipódromo in Las Lagunas this Tuesday, together with technicians from the General Directorate of Public Health of the Junta of Andalucía. This is the fourth and final weekly control since the presence of the mosquito species that can transmit the Nile virus was detected on July 24.
The alert period declared by the Junta ends this Friday, August 21, and until then, the Town Council will continue all control activities. The Health Councillor, Marco Cortés, explained that technicians from the pest control company regularly check for the possible presence of the species at the sampling points.
Since the detection in the Miramar area, fumigations have been carried out in parks, drains, and wet areas of the municipality that could harbour larvae. No cases of the virus in people have been reported in Mijas, as confirmed by the Junta of Andalucía.
Among the actions taken, on July 29, the Andalucía, El Abuelo, and 3 de Abril parks in Las Lagunas were closed for a full day for fumigation. The frequency of insecticide treatments in wet areas has also been reduced from biweekly to weekly, and all drains in the affected area have been monitored within a radius of up to one and a half kilometres.
Additionally, the Town Council has informed private companies with wet areas, such as golf courses, and has collaborated with the College of Property Administrators on recommendations directed at homeowners' associations.
The Health Department will acquire new traps with its own funds to expand sampling in new locations, thereby increasing the available information and reducing risk. After the alert period ends, the municipal area will be made available to the Junta to carry out the actions determined.
