The Mijas Town Hall is moving from biweekly to weekly fumigations in wet areas and will close three parks this Wednesday for extraordinary insecticide treatment.
The Mijas Town Hall has launched a reinforcement of its action plan against the mosquito that can transmit the West Nile virus, after the Junta de Andalucía detected the presence of the vector in the Miramar area. The measures include an increase in the frequency of fumigations and the installation of new traps to monitor the insect population.
According to the Councillor for Health, Marco Cortés, the frequency of fumigations in the areas most conducive to mosquito breeding will change from biweekly to weekly. This action will remain in place at least until August 21, the date on which the alert declared by the Andalusian Government is expected to conclude.
Additionally, the Town Hall has acquired new traps with municipal funds that will allow for sampling at more points in the municipality. The aim is to expand the available information and reduce the risk of virus transmission.
As part of the extraordinary actions, the Andalucía, 3 de Abril, and Del Abuelo parks, all located in Las Lagunas, will remain closed all day this Wednesday, July 29. Specialized technicians from the company Serviplaga, awarded the municipal service, will carry out insecticide treatment in these public spaces.
Cortés has stated that he will participate in a follow-up meeting convened in the Health District tomorrow, where the evolution of the situation will be evaluated. The action plan is included in the Surveillance and Control Plan that the Mijas Town Hall has in force and which has the approval of the Junta de Andalucía.
The councillor recalled that on July 14, the Junta conducted an inspection in the municipality and did not detect the presence of the virus. However, after the alert was announced, the Town Hall carried out emergency fumigations within a 1.5-kilometre radius from the location where the vector was found, which concluded on Sunday night.
The Mijas Town Hall has wanted to convey a message of calm to the population, while insisting on the importance of adopting individual preventive measures, such as using repellents and mosquito nets, as well as avoiding the accumulation of stagnant water in buckets, tubs, or ponds on private properties.
The detection of the mosquito in Miramar has activated control protocols on the Costa del Sol, where high temperatures and humidity favour the proliferation of these insects. Mijas thus joins other municipalities that have reinforced their anti-vector action plans.
Residents in the areas near the affected parks have been informed of the temporary closure, which will be limited to Wednesday. It is recommended to avoid contact with the treated areas until the products have taken effect.
The Town Hall will continue to inform about upcoming actions through its official channels and reminds that any symptoms compatible with the West Nile virus should be consulted with a healthcare professional.
