The Dolmens of Antequera Archaeological Site hosts the first day of a workshop on archaeology and landscape of the Cultural Landscapes Alliance, which continues on Friday.
The Dolmens of Antequera Archaeological Site hosted this Thursday the first day of the workshop “Landscape and Archaeology: Readings and Interpretation of the Territory”, organized under the Alliance of Cultural Landscapes and Related World Heritage Sites. The meeting continues on Friday with representatives and specialists analysing how archaeology helps to understand the landscape and guide its conservation.
The mayor of Antequera, Manolo Barón, presented the talk “When the Landscape Became Sacred: The Universal Legacy of the Dolmens of Antequera.” He started from the view of the Peña de los Enamorados from inside Menga to explain the orientation of the dolmen and the questions it raises about the communities that built it.
“To understand Menga we have to look at its stones - its covers and orthostats - and also look from them,” noted Manolo Barón.
The intervention reminded that the Dolmens of Antequera Site includes Menga, Viera, El Romeral, the Peña de los Enamorados and El Torcal. It also mentioned the work of the archaeoastronomer Michael Hoskin and distinguished between the archaeological evidence of the possible sacred reference of the mountain and the beliefs of its builders, which remain open.
The Secretary General of the Alliance, María del Pozo López, explained that the meeting serves to study how past communities interpreted the territory. According to her words, the exchange among partners allows “to learn above all to manage ourselves better and preserve them for future generations.”

Manolo Barón indicated that the workshop coincides with the tenth anniversary of the inscription of the Dolmens Site in the World Heritage List. The meetings of the Board of Directors and the Assembly were held on Wednesday, October 21, at the City Museum of Antequera, while the workshop sessions take place at the Archaeological Site, with activities also planned in El Torcal.
For Friday, a program is scheduled with case studies on the rock art of the Mediterranean Arc, the Tower of Hercules, and the archaeological heritage of Eivissa. The sessions will take place at the Dolmens of Antequera Archaeological Site.
