The Mijas Tourist Office is hosting this month an exhibition by the Mijas Artisan Association (AAM) featuring works by local artisans Laura Benavides Carrera and Humildad Ríos Escalona. The exhibition will be open to the public until October 30, Monday to Friday, from 9:00 to 15:00 hours.
Benavides, creator of Quejojoyas, presents accessories made from polymer clay, mainly earrings and pendants. The exhibition also includes photographs showing part of the process of making her pieces.
“It’s an important showcase because a lot of people pass through here. The last time I exhibited, there were people who contacted me to purchase a piece or to follow my work on social media,” Benavides explained.
For the artisan, these types of initiatives serve “to get known and gain visibility.”
On her part, Ríos Escalona displays a selection of illustrations created on supports such as ceramics, esparto paper, cellulose, wood, and natural leaves.
“I wanted to show that illustration can be applied practically to any surface and to present a small representation of what I do daily in my workshop,” Ríos explained.
The artisan had previously exhibited in this same space with resin works. “It was quite well received and many people were interested in the technique and the process of making. This time I wanted to show something I have been doing since I was little, which is painting and illustration, and to demonstrate that the canvas can be whatever you propose,” she added.
The Councillor for Tourism, Francisco Jerez, noted that the Tourist Office receives numerous visitors each day and that the exhibition allows for the promotion of the work of the artisans in the municipality.
“Those who enter the Tourist Office not only find information about the municipality, but also a corner where they can discover the work of our artisans,” Jerez pointed out.
The councillor highlighted the level of detail in some pieces and framed the exhibition within the effort to give greater projection to local craftsmanship.
“We have artisans with their own identity and work that we must value. Showcasing Mijas craftsmanship in the Tourist Office is another step to give it greater projection and to ensure it is also part of the image we present of Mijas beyond our borders,” Jerez concluded.
The exhibition can be visited until October 30 at the Mijas Tourist Office, Monday to Friday, from 9:00 to 15:00 hours.
