The Antequera City Council gathered municipal officials this Monday to review the PALSIS, its seismic emergency plan, in light of the recent seismic activity in Andalusia.
The Antequera City Council held a working meeting this Monday to review the procedures of the Local Action Plan for Seismic Risk (PALSIS), directly prompted by the mayor, Manolo Barón, due to the necessity of keeping the protocols in mind among the services that would intervene in an emergency.
This initiative comes after the 4.8 magnitude earthquake recorded last Saturday in Alhendín (Granada), which was felt throughout the community and led the Junta de Andalucía to activate the emergency phase, operational situation 1, of the Plan for Seismic Risk. It is also in response to the tremor of magnitude 1.7 detected on August 10 in Campillos, in the Antequera region.
A pioneering plan since 2014
Antequera has had this plan since its approval in the Municipal Plenary of November 2014, having been homologated by the Junta de Andalucía and coming into effect in March 2016. At the time, it was considered pioneering and a reference for other administrations.
The PALSIS establishes the guidelines for action in the event of an earthquake, including territorial analysis, evacuation routes, buildings of special interest, and coordination mechanisms. This Monday's meeting aims to ensure that municipal officials are aware of their functions and the resources available.
The City Council emphasizes that the recent seismic activity is an opportunity to maintain a culture of prevention without causing alarm, aware that Antequera is located in a seismically risky area.
Previous experience in drills
Antequera has already demonstrated its preparedness in this area. In March 2025, the Archaeological Ensemble of the Dolmens hosted a drill for a 6.1 magnitude earthquake with a simulated epicenter in El Torcal, involving around 200 personnel and rehearsing evacuations and the safeguarding of cultural assets.
“Prevention requires that administrations be prepared and that those responsible for an emergency know the procedures they must follow perfectly,” stated Manolo Barón.
The mayor insisted that “this is not about generating alarm, but precisely the opposite: to convey calm through prevention and preparation.” He added that his duty is “to make the necessary decisions to protect the people of Antequera.”
With this meeting, the City Council reinforces the coordination of municipal services and fully maintains the procedures of the PALSIS in the face of any potential seismic emergency.
