The Virgen del Carmen festival in Nerja will be celebrated from July 12 to 18 with new features such as a mass at the Balcón de Europa and a handcrafted floral arch. This edition comes after being declared a Fiesta de Singularidad Turística Provincial.

The Malaga town of Nerja is finalising preparations for one of its most significant events on the summer calendar: the Virgen del Carmen festival, which this year will take place from July 12 to 18 with important new features. The programme, presented by the Town Hall and the Brotherhood of Our Lady of Carmen, includes for the first time a mass at the iconic Balcón de Europa, a floral arch made by local residents, and the traditional Moraga Popular.

New features in the programme: mass at the Balcón de Europa and handcrafted floral arch

The main new feature of this edition is the celebration of a mass at the Balcón de Europa, scheduled for Sunday, July 12 at 21:00 hours. This is the first time that this space will host a religious event of the festival, allowing attendees to enjoy a unique view with the sea as a backdrop. Another notable addition is a large floral arch handcrafted by the residents of Nerja, which will welcome the image of the Virgin upon her arrival at La Torrecilla beach, just moments before the start of the maritime procession.

The festival also arrives with the recent recognition of Fiesta de Singularidad Turística Provincial, a distinction awarded by the Malaga Provincial Council that highlights the deep-rootedness and tourist projection of this celebration. For the people of Nerja, this title represents a boost to a tradition that attracts thousands of visitors each year.

The main day: July 16, maritime procession and fireworks

The central event will take place on July 16, the feast day of the Virgen del Carmen, patroness of sailors. After the mass in her honour, the image will parade through the streets of Nerja to La Torrecilla beach, where it will board a boat to lead the procession along the coast. The disembarkation will take place at Calahonda beach, thus completing a route that combines land and sea. During the procession, highly anticipated moments such as the showering of petals from balconies and the performance of the Salve Marinera will be repeated, before the fireworks display that will conclude the day.

The programme will officially kick off on July 15 with a mass in memory of deceased brothers, a floral offering, and the opening of the traditional marine market in the Plaza de los Cangrejos. This market, which attracts numerous curious visitors each year, offers artisanal products and souvenirs related to the maritime world.

Moraga Popular and closing events

Events will continue on Friday, July 17, with performances by dance academies, the presentation of recognitions from the Brotherhood, and the trophies for the Fishing Competition. On Saturday, July 18, as a closing to the celebrations, the traditional Moraga Popular will take place, where grilled sardines will be distributed, a typical delicacy of the Malaga coast. The performance by the group Las Carlotas will provide the musical touch to this day of community.

The Town Hall and the Brotherhood encourage residents and tourists to participate in one of the most emblematic celebrations on the Nerja calendar. For residents, this festival is also an opportunity to reconnect with traditions and share them with those visiting the municipality. The streets of the historic centre and the promenade are preparing to welcome thousands of people in a week that combines devotion, culture, and gastronomy.

For those wishing to attend, it is recommended to arrive early on the busiest days, especially on July 16, and to check the schedule of events on the Nerja Town Hall website. The maritime procession, which departs from La Torrecilla, is one of the most photographed moments, so photography enthusiasts will not want to miss it.
