The Public Foundation of Cueva de Nerja has announced the suspension of the 2026 edition of the festival due to a challenge presented by the company excluded from the competition for its organisation between 2026 and 2030.
The Public Foundation of Cueva de Nerja announced on Monday the suspension of the 2026 edition of the Cueva de Nerja Festival due to the challenge presented by the company that was excluded from the contracting process for the organisation of the event between 2026 and 2030.
The file was initiated in 2025 with the aim of ensuring the stability of the festival over the next five years. The contract contemplated the celebration of between 10 and 12 top-level concerts per edition, as detailed by the Foundation.
Following the final awarding of the contract and the announcement of the 2026 edition, the excluded company filed a new challenge with the Central Administrative Tribunal for Contractual Resources (TACRC), which has resulted in the legal suspension of the process and prevented its execution within the necessary timelines to organise the festival this year.
A suspension that leaves Nerja without its major musical event
The Foundation maintains that it has taken all necessary actions to make the celebration of the festival viable, collaborating with the TACRC and promoting the processing of the file to ensure the organisation of the concerts and the associated activities and services.
It also indicates that it requested the lifting of the suspension as it considered that its maintenance caused serious harm to the public interest, although the absence of a resolution within the required timelines makes it materially impossible to organise the 2026 edition with the necessary legal, technical, logistical, and security guarantees.
For the residents of Nerja and the Axarquía region, the suspension represents a severe blow: the festival, held in the stunning setting of the Cueva de Nerja, is one of the main tourist and cultural attractions in the area, with a significant economic impact on local hotels, restaurants, and businesses.
The future of the festival rests with the TACRC
The Foundation has stated that once the TACRC issues a resolution, it will take the appropriate measures to ensure the continuity of future editions of the festival. It has lamented this situation, reiterating its commitment to legality, transparency, legal security, and the general interest, as well as to the continuity of one of the most important cultural events in Andalusia.
In the meantime, music lovers will have to wait. The 2026 edition, which had already generated anticipation, is now uncertain. The Foundation hopes that the tribunal will resolve swiftly so that it can resume organisation in the coming years. However, with the lesson learned: administrative deadlines and challenges can turn any musical dream into a bureaucratic nightmare.
