Benalmádena Town Hall has tendered the restoration works of Torre Bermeja, with an investment of €375,000. The tower, a Cultural Heritage Asset, dates back to the 13th and 14th centuries.
The Benalmádena Town Hall has put out to tender the restoration and conservation works of Torre Bermeja, an intervention that will have a budget of €375,000 and aims to ensure the protection and enhancement of one of the most unique monuments in the local heritage.
The tower, built between the 13th and 14th centuries as part of the Nasrid defensive system, is declared a Cultural Heritage Asset with the category of Monument. It is part of the coastal surveillance network that historically structured the territory and is one of the three watchtowers that are preserved in the municipality.
The project has an execution period of eight months and includes a grant of €269,117.93 from the aid line for Tourist Municipalities of Andalusia (MUNITUR) from the Andalusian government.
The works will focus on the consolidation and restoration of the monument, respecting its historical stratigraphy, recovering its original volume, and adapting its immediate surroundings to make it more accessible and integrate it into the landscape. Lighting and signage elements will also be incorporated to enhance its interpretation.
Among the planned actions is the execution of a new roof, currently non-existent, which will resolve the problems of leaks and water drainage affecting the conservation of the monument. Historical elements such as the gargoyles located at the cardinal points will also be recovered.
The intervention also includes the recovery of the original level of the base of the tower and the arrangement of its surroundings through benches, ramps, vegetation, and wooden pavements, creating an accessible space that respects the landscape.
The City Council has highlighted that this action constitutes "a decisive step to ensure the conservation of a historical element of extraordinary value." The works will be carried out under the criteria of minimal intervention and maximum respect for the original elements, with cleaning, sealing, and re-pointing of walls, as well as the removal of incompatible materials from previous interventions.
Located in the Benalmádena Marina, Torre Bermeja visually linked with the towers of Pimentel in Torremolinos and Torrequebrada, forming part of the coastal surveillance network that protected this stretch of coastline.
