The Benalmádena Town Council has put out to tender the restoration and conservation works of Torre Bermeja, with an investment of €375,000. The project, co-financed by the Junta de Andalucía, aims to recover this 14th-century BIC.
The Town Council of Benalmádena has put out to tender the restoration and conservation works of Torre Bermeja, an initiative that will involve an investment of €375,000 and will ensure the protection and enhancement of one of the most unique monuments in the local historical heritage.
The project includes a grant of €269,117.93 from the Tourist Municipalities of Andalucía (MUNITUR) aid line from the Tourism and Andalucía Exterior Department of the Junta de Andalucía for the 2025 fiscal year.
This initiative represents a decisive step to ensure the conservation of a historically significant element, as Torre Bermeja is part of the coastal defensive and surveillance system that historically structured the territory that today makes up Benalmádena. Built between the 13th and 14th centuries as part of the Nasrid defensive system, the tower occupies a strategic location on the coast and is one of the three examples of watchtowers that are currently preserved in the municipality.
The project outlines an execution period of eight months and aims primarily at consolidating and restoring the monument while respecting its historical stratigraphy, recovering its original volume, and adapting its immediate surroundings to make it more accessible and integrate it into the landscape. Additionally, lighting and signage elements will be incorporated to enhance its interpretation and value.
The intervention will be carried out under the principles of minimal intervention and maximum respect for the original elements. In this regard, cleaning, sealing, and grouting of the walls will be undertaken, along with protection treatments and structural consolidation, as well as the removal of incompatible materials added in previous interventions, replacing them with more suitable solutions from a heritage perspective.
Among the planned actions, the execution of a new roof, currently non-existent, stands out, which will resolve the issues of leaks and water drainage affecting the conservation of the monument, while also recovering historical elements such as the gargoyles located at the cardinal points.
The project also includes the recovery of the original level of the base of the tower and the arrangement of its surroundings through benches, ramps, vegetation, and wooden pavements, creating an accessible, integrated, and landscape-respecting space that enhances the monumentality of the construction.
Beyond the physical conservation of the property, the initiative aims to bring this heritage asset closer to the public, fostering knowledge of local history and reinforcing the cultural and tourist value of the municipality.
Torre Bermeja is declared a Bien de Interés Cultural, with the category of Monument, according to the Law 16/1985, on Spanish Historical Heritage. Located in the Benalmádena Marina, it visually connected with the towers of Pimentel in Torremolinos and Torrequebrada, forming part of the coastal surveillance network that protected this stretch of coastline.
With this initiative, the Benalmádena Town Council reaffirms its commitment to the conservation of historical heritage and the recovery of elements that are part of the identity and collective memory of the municipality.
