The municipal council of Fuengirola has approved an institutional declaration to congratulate local athletes and clubs for their successes in national and international championships, including three world titles in obstacle racing.
The Fuengirola City Council has brought to the council an institutional declaration to congratulate the athletes and clubs of the city that have excelled in national and international competitions in recent months. The recognition highlights the three world titles achieved at the OCR World Championship, the World Championship of Obstacle Racing, held in Ireland from 6 to 9 August.
Álvaro Puerma Martínez was crowned world champion in the 35 to 39 years category, after winning a 3.5-kilometre race with 13 obstacles. Also the fastest in the long-distance category, over 15 kilometres, was Fuengirola firefighter Jaime Pardo, who balances his professional work with elite sports.
The third Fuengirola star is Beatriz Rubio Lastra, world champion in the Mixed Elite category, the only woman on a three-member team. Both Rubio and Puerma regularly train at the parkour park of Área Libre Fuengirola.
The declaration also acknowledges the results of the swimmers from the Fuengirola Swimming Club in the championships held in July and August. At the XLVII Junior Championship of Spain, held in Sabadell from 23 to 26 July, Julia Medina Martín won silver in the 200 metres freestyle and bronze in the 400 metres freestyle, while Marcos Catharino Rosatto took bronze in the 200 metres butterfly.
At the XXXV Absolute-Junior Championship of Andalucía, held in Málaga from 31 July to 2 August, Medina added gold in the 400 metres freestyle and silvers in the 100 and 200 metres freestyle. The women's relays also reached the podium with silver in the 4×200 and bronze in the 4×100.
In the junior category, Maria Veterkov won gold in the 100 and 200 metres backstroke and added three silvers; Paula Cristina Guevara Nouel took gold in the 50 metres backstroke, silver in the 100 metres and bronze in the 200 metres backstroke; and Malak Dias Rharrouch added two bronzes in the 200 and 400 metres freestyle. Diana Mª Valean Sasa achieved silvers in the 100 and 200 metres butterfly, and Aileen Colomer Giménez won silvers in the 50 and 200 metres freestyle and bronzes in the 100 metres freestyle and 100 metres butterfly.
The City Council has extended its congratulations to the clubs, coaches, and families, and has reaffirmed its commitment to promoting sports, ensuring that these successes bring the name of Fuengirola to national and world podiums.
