The Civil Guard has arrested the driver who fled after fatally hitting Nikoline, a 17-year-old Norwegian girl, on July 6 on the A-7 motorway near Mijas. The arrest took place on Monday after agents located a vehicle with damage consistent with the impact.
The incident occurred around 5:20 a.m. at kilometre point 1.027 of the A-7, within the municipality of Mijas. Initially, a witness indicated that the vehicle involved could be a truck, but the debris found on the road led investigators to focus on a car. This lead allowed them to identify and arrest the driver.
Nikoline's final moments
The investigation has reconstructed the victim's movements thanks to her mobile phone, found near the scene of the incident. Nikoline had spent the night in Puerto Banús (Marbella) with a group of friends and was returning in a ride-sharing vehicle (VTC) that she shared with two other young people. According to the driver, the young woman asked to get out before reaching her destination, on a stretch of the A-7 located in Mijas, where she was staying during her holiday.
The minor was enjoying a few days of rest on the Costa del Sol and was scheduled to return to Norway on the same day she lost her life. After failing to contact her, her parents spread an urgent message on social media to report her disappearance. The last time she was seen alive was at the Funky Buddha nightclub in Puerto Banús, accompanied by a group of young Norwegians.
Investigation underway
The Civil Guard continues with the proceedings to clarify the circumstances of the incident. The arrested individual has been placed at the disposal of the judiciary and is charged with involuntary manslaughter and leaving the scene of the accident. Investigators are now analysing whether the driver acted negligently or if other circumstances were involved.
The incident has shocked the Norwegian community on the Costa del Sol, where Nikoline was spending her holiday. The young woman, who was studying in her home country, had travelled to Spain to enjoy a few days of leisure. Her parents, who have cooperated with the investigation, hope that justice will be served.
The Mijas Town Hall has expressed its condolences to the family and has reminded the importance of exercising extreme caution on the roads, especially on motorway stretches where pedestrians should not walk. The incident has reopened the debate on road safety on the A-7, a route with high traffic density on the Costa del Sol.
The arrest marks a step forward in the investigation, which still needs to determine the exact causes of the accident. It is expected that in the coming days the arrested individual will testify before the judge and more details about what happened that July morning will be revealed.
