Fuengirola will once again pay tribute to Juan Soto 'El Chope' with the fourth edition of his memorial, a football triangular that will take place on Sunday, September 6 at the Suel football field starting at 19:00.
The match will bring together the Roma community, members of the Civil Guard, and the National Police in an event aimed at keeping the memory of Juan Soto alive, promoting coexistence, and using sport as a tool against racism and stereotypes.
The Councillor for Sports, Julio Rodríguez, and Francisco Soto, representing the Roma community and the family, presented this new edition today at the municipal facilities.
“We are very pleased to continue this memorial for another year, which holds a very special meaning for Fuengirola and, especially, for all the people who knew and shared with Juan Soto his commitment to integration and coexistence,” said the councillor, who added that “sport is once again the meeting point between three communities to share a day of coexistence, respect, and camaraderie.”
Rodríguez recalled that the memorial was born as an initiative against racism and that, after being revived in 2024 after fifteen years without being held, it has become established in the city's sports calendar. “We want this tradition to continue and for new generations to also know the figure of Juan Soto and the values he defended for so many years,” he stated.
The councillor thanked the involvement of the Civil Guard, the National Police, and the Roma community in the organisation, as well as “the collaboration and willingness of all the people who make it possible for this match to be held again in Fuengirola.”
Francisco Soto highlighted the continuity of the initiative and its significance for those who keep the memory of Juan Soto alive.
“This memorial is much more than a football match. It is an opportunity for us to meet, share, and continue to pass on to the younger generations values such as respect, equality, and coexistence,” he said.
This triangular match recaptures the spirit of the encounters that were held in Fuengirola for years, with Juan Soto being one of its main promoters. His commitment to the integration of the Roma community and his passion for sport turned these matches into a particularly significant event for the city.
