The Vélez-Málaga City Council has opened an investigation and requests citizen collaboration to clarify the origin of the two fires recorded on Thursday, which mobilised over a hundred personnel and affected traffic on the A-7.
The Vélez-Málaga Council has issued a call to residents to provide any information that may help determine how the two fires that broke out last Thursday in the municipality began. The fires, which necessitated the mobilization of a large emergency response, occurred in the fairgrounds area and in the northern zone, near the La Gloria neighbourhood.
Two fires in one afternoon
The first fire was reported in the fairgrounds area, next to the A-7 motorway, affecting a vegetation area. The flames caused incidents in traffic and forced the closure of the motorway exit from Torrox towards Vélez-Málaga. Hours later, around 22:30, a second fire was detected in the vicinity of La Fortaleza, in the northern part of the municipality.
According to residents, firefighters were initially working on one side of the hill when the fire spread towards the back of the La Gloria neighbourhood, which necessitated heightened vigilance. Both fires are now under control thanks to the rapid action of the emergency response team, according to municipal sources.
Over a hundred personnel mobilised
In the firefighting and coordination efforts, personnel from the Vélez-Málaga, Nerja, and Rincón de la Victoria fire stations participated, along with local police, national police, traffic guard civil, and other emergency services. In total, over a hundred personnel worked to control the situation and minimise damage.
The mayor of Vélez-Málaga, Jesús Lupiáñez, personally visited the various fire sites to monitor the situation's evolution, accompanied by the local police chief, the national police commissioner, and the heads of the different security and emergency bodies.
Investigation opened and call to residents
The City Council has opened an investigation to determine the origin of both fires. In a statement shared on social media, the Council requests that anyone who has witnessed any relevant events or has information that could contribute to the investigation contact the local police or national police.
The Council has also thanked all security and emergency bodies for their efforts, as well as the collaboration and responsibility demonstrated by residents throughout the day when the personnel intervened.
For the residents of Vélez-Málaga, this incident has been a reminder of the importance of prevention and rapid response to fires in vegetation areas near urban centres. The City Council recommends maintaining vigilance and reporting any signs of fire immediately to the authorities.
