The Mughyrat team triumphed 11-7 over Legacy in the final of the Manuel Prado and Colón de Carvajal Memorial, held this Sunday on field 3 of Los Pinos, Sotogrande.
The Mughyrat team claimed the title of the Manuel Prado and Colón de Carvajal Memorial Polo this Sunday after defeating Legacy 11-7 in an intense final held on field 3 of Los Pinos, in Sotogrande. The team, making its debut this season, managed to prevail thanks to a comeback in the second chukker.
Legacy started the match strongly, with Bautista Riglos scoring three goals in the early stages, giving them an initial lead of 4-2. However, Mughyrat responded in the second chukker led by their star player, Juan Zubiaurre, who scored seven goals and was named the best player of the final. From that point on, Mughyrat dominated the game and did not allow Legacy to come within two goals.
The defensive solidity of Tomás Gándara
Another pillar of the victory was Tomás Gándara, whose solidity at the back of the field was key in containing Legacy's attacks. The Mughyrat team, consisting of Mohammed Hussein, Santos Valent (substituted by Carlos Silva), Juan Zubiaurre, and Tomás Gándara, demonstrated great cohesion. For polo fans on the Costa del Sol, this tournament marks the kickoff of the season in Sotogrande, which offers free entry to all matches.
The president of Ayala Polo Club, Paola Zóbel, was present at the awards ceremony, alongside other authorities such as Manolo Prado, who presented the trophy bearing his name, and Bianca Zóbel, who did the same for the Memorial Founder Enrique Zóbel. Also in attendance were María Cruz Conde, representative of Covetsol, and Emilia Barone, from Ammari Fragrances.
Other finals of the weekend
As a prelude to the grand final, Estancia Lamar defeated MF Polo on field 2 of Los Pinos and claimed the Memorial Founder Enrique Zóbel. On Saturday, Tahanto Polo Team won the La Criolla Cup, while Dany's Polo did the same with the Minuto Siete Cup. These parallel tournaments completed an intense polo weekend in Sotogrande, attracting visitors from across the province of Málaga.
For the locals, the polo season in Sotogrande is an opportunity to enjoy elite sport in a privileged setting. The free entry allows anyone interested to approach the Los Pinos fields and experience the excitement of live polo. Next weekend, matches will continue, with schedules yet to be confirmed.
The best horse of the final was Open Optimista, ridden by Juan Zubiaurre, while the award for the best patron player went to Mohammed Hussein. The organisation is already preparing for the upcoming matches, which promise to maintain the high competitive level of this season's start.
