The Estepona Town Hall is organising a free Lyrical Festival on 24th and 25th July at the bullring, featuring 'Madama Butterfly' and 'Agua, azucarillos y aguardiente'.
Next weekend, the Estepona bullring will transform into an open-air lyrical stage. The Town Hall has scheduled a free festival with two classic titles: the opera 'Madama Butterfly' by Puccini and the zarzuela 'Agua, azucarillos y aguardiente' by Federico Chueca. Both performances will be presented by the Málaga-based company Teatro Lírico Andaluz, directed by Pablo Prados.
On Friday 24th July at 21:00, 'Madama Butterfly' will be performed, one of the most iconic operas in the universal repertoire. The story narrates the tragic tale of a Japanese geisha abandoned by an American officer. Premiered in 1904 at La Scala in Milan, it was initially a failure but became a worldwide success after revisions. Admission will be free until full capacity, so arriving early is recommended.
Zarzuela and opera for all audiences
On Saturday 25th July, at the same time, it will be the turn of the zarzuela 'Agua, azucarillos y aguardiente', a comedic piece in one act with a libretto by Miguel Ramos Carrión and music by Federico Chueca. The plot follows the adventures of Asia, a young girl living in Madrid with her mother, Doña Simona, who dreams of an impossible love while dealing with debts. The work is a costumbrist portrait of late 19th century Madrid, filled with humour and catchy melodies.
The festival aims to bring lyrical performances closer to all residents of Estepona and visitors. According to sources from the Town Hall, the initiative seeks to promote musical culture and provide quality leisure at no cost. The bullring, with its capacity for several hundred people, will be the ideal setting for these summer evenings.
How to enjoy the lyrical festival in Estepona
Attendees can access for free, but capacity is limited. It is advisable to arrive early to secure a spot. Both performances will start at 21:00, a suitable time to enjoy the evening coolness. No prior tickets are necessary; the organisation will allow entry on a first-come, first-served basis.
This event adds to the cultural offerings of summer on the Costa del Sol, where municipalities like Marbella and Fuengirola also schedule concerts and outdoor theatre. For lovers of opera and zarzuela, it is a unique opportunity to see top-level works without travelling to major capitals. The Teatro Lírico Andaluz company, based in Málaga, has a long history of promoting lyrical genres throughout Andalucía.
In case of rain, the festival would move to the municipal auditorium, although weather forecasts indicate stable conditions. Organisers recommend checking the Town Hall's social media for any last-minute changes. Undoubtedly, it is a must-attend event for Estepona residents and tourists who wish to enjoy classical music in a unique setting.
