The Estepona Town Hall is organising a free Lyrical Festival on July 24 and 25 at the bullring. The Andalusian Lyrical Theatre company will perform 'Madama Butterfly' and 'Agua, azucarillos y aguardiente'.
The Málaga-based Andalusian Lyrical Theatre, under the baton of Pablo Prados, will stage two classic works at the Estepona bullring. On Friday, July 24, at 21:00, it will be the turn of 'Madama Butterfly', the famous opera by Giacomo Puccini. On Saturday, July 25, at the same time, the zarzuela 'Agua, azucarillos y aguardiente' by Federico Chueca will be performed. Admission is free until capacity is reached, an opportunity that residents of the Costa del Sol should not miss.
A High-Quality Programme for Summer Nights
The Lyrical Festival, organised by the Estepona Town Hall, aims to bring lyrical music to all audiences. The opera 'Madama Butterfly', premiered in 1904 at La Scala in Milan, tells the tragic story of a Japanese geisha abandoned by an American officer. Although its premiere was a fiasco, it is now one of the most performed operas in the world. Puccini was inspired by a story by John Luther Long and the novel 'Madame Chrysanthème' by Pierre Loti, based on real events that occurred in Nagasaki in the 1890s.
On the other hand, 'Agua, azucarillos y aguardiente' is a one-act zarzuela with a libretto by Miguel Ramos Carrión. The work tells the adventures of Asia, a naive young woman, and her mother Doña Simona, who live in Madrid with financial difficulties. Amid debts and dreams of love, the plot encapsulates a costumbrist portrait of late 19th-century Spain. Chueca's music, cheerful and catchy, is a classic of the género chico.
How to Enjoy the Festival Without Spending a Penny
The Town Hall has set up the bullring as a stage, an outdoor space that promises a unique experience under the stars. Admission is free, but seating is limited, so arriving early is recommended. The performances start at 21:00, an ideal time to enjoy the summer cool. Attendees can park nearby or use public transport, as the bullring is well connected.
For lovers of lyrical music, this festival is a must-attend event. And for those who have never seen an opera or zarzuela, it is the perfect opportunity to discover them without risk: if you don’t like it, at least it won’t cost a penny. The Andalusian Lyrical Theatre, with its director Pablo Prados at the helm, has received good reviews for previous productions, ensuring a notable artistic level.
The festival adds to Estepona's cultural offerings, which during the summer features concerts, theatre, and activities for all tastes. Residents of the Western Costa del Sol now have a different plan for July nights, away from the hustle and bustle of the beaches. The combination of a tragic opera and a comic zarzuela promises two very different yet equally memorable evenings.
In short, the Estepona Town Hall is committed to accessible culture with this free lyrical festival. Those who attend will be able to enjoy two masterpieces in a unique setting. And if the weather is good, the experience will be perfect. However, it is advisable to arrive early to secure a good spot: the bullring has a capacity of about 4,000 people, and free admission usually fills the stands at similar events.
