The Ronda City Council has allocated around €140,000 for safety works on dilapidated buildings, with a particular focus on the historic centre. About thirty properties have already been addressed.
The Ronda City Council has launched an emergency plan to tackle the deterioration of dozens of buildings, with an investment close to €140,000 dedicated to safety works. The action is primarily concentrated in the historic area, where most of the dilapidated properties are located, and aims to preserve urban heritage.
The most recent intervention is taking place on Armiñán Street, where traffic has been cut off from Thursday until Friday in the section leading to Abul Beka Square. Workers are installing a structure to secure the façade of a building, costing nearly €78,000. The closure will also be in effect on Friday, from 6:00 AM to 3:00 PM.
In this specific case, the City Council is acting subsidiarily, as the owner of the property left no heirs and the ownership is undetermined. The councillor for Urban Planning, Jesús Vázquez, explained that the property is "in a limbo created by the Spanish Government" and that it will be the courts that resolve the ownership, but in the meantime, it is the municipal administration that is covering the costs.
"We have already acted, in one way or another, on 30 properties," Jesús Vázquez stated.
The Urban Planning department has inventoried a total of 51 dilapidated properties in Ronda, of which about thirty are located in the historic centre. Of the total, 16 present a serious risk, 14 a medium risk, and 21 a low risk. The actions have included declarations of ruin, coercive fines, requirements for property owners, and subsidiary works.
In addition to Armiñán Street, the City Council has carried out other recent interventions: on Tenorio Street, elements of a house were secured for about €5,500; on Espíritu Santo Street, a building was demolished at a cost of around €38,000; and on Cuesta de Santo Domingo, nearly €15,000 was invested in another demolition due to the risk of collapse following the last series of storms. This weather episode prompted the City Council to intensify actions in this area.
Impact on traffic and public transport
Due to the works on Armiñán Street, residents will be able to access from Plaza de España to Tenorio Street and Cuesta de Santo Domingo, while access from the San Francisco neighbourhood will be allowed towards Plaza Duquesa de Parcent and Plaza Abul Beka. The City Council has apologised for the inconveniences.
As for urban buses, Line 2 will only operate from the sports centre in the San Francisco neighbourhood to Ruedo Alameda, Planilla, Arenal, and Hospital, with a free transfer to Line 1 at the Hospital to connect with the centre.
