MARBELLA, 18 AUGUST 2026. Costa del Sol University Hospital (HUCS), part of the Andalusian Health Service, has implemented ultrasound-guided vascular access in its Intensive Care Unit (ICU). This measure aims to improve the safety and quality of care provided to critically ill patients.
Advanced Technique in Intensive Care
Ultrasound-guided vascular access involves the use of a portable ultrasound machine by nursing staff to guide the insertion of venous or arterial catheters. This modern method avoids traditional approaches that rely solely on palpation, allowing real-time visualization of vascular structures, which significantly increases accuracy in insertion.
If access through PICC venous catheters is not possible, an intensivist is also available to perform the implantation of central venous catheters, providing support to the specialised nursing staff.
Benefits for Patients and Professionals
The new technique not only reduces patient pain and anxiety by decreasing unnecessary punctures but also improves clinical safety by lowering the risk of serious complications. This facilitates the administration of intravenous treatments more effectively and safely.
Since its integration in June 2026, the nursing team has channelled 61 devices, with a significant percentage of central venous catheters. It is estimated that around 550 patients will benefit annually from this technique, ensuring more comfortable and safer stays.
Moreover, this advancement highlights the evolution of the nursing role in the intensive care area, validating their ability to perform complex procedures with high competence and efficiency, benefiting both patients and professionals in their daily routines.
