The renovation and adaptation works of the Museum of Popular Arts of Benagalbón, in Rincón de la Victoria, are progressing well and have already reached 20% completion. The works began at the end of last July and are being carried out by the awarded company SERCONSA REHABILITACIONES, SL.
The project, with a budget of €158,101.15, including VAT, is fully funded by the Provincial Council of Málaga. The expected execution period is three months, so the museum could reopen its doors at the end of October.
The councillor for Works and General Services, Sergio Díaz, has stated that "with this work, we will significantly improve both the condition of the building and its functionality, with the renewal of spaces and facilities and the incorporation of the former sports club into the museum's area."
The renovation includes the creation of a large open exhibition hall, as well as a reception area, an accessible toilet, and a space designated for storage. The tasks consist of a complete renewal of the coverings, false ceilings, flooring, and carpentry, and the updating of the air conditioning, lighting, ventilation, water supply, and sanitation installations.
There will also be waterproofing work on the façade, as part of the premises is below street level. In terms of accessibility, the location of the access door will be modified, and the existing ramp will be removed, with the aim of ensuring universal accessibility to the entire museum.
The mayor of Rincón de la Victoria, Francisco Salado, has highlighted that "this action represents an important step in valuing one of the spaces that best represents the history, traditions, and identity of Benagalbón and the municipality." Salado emphasised that the museum "will reopen fully renovated and will integrate into the network of heritage spaces in the municipality," alongside the Cueva del Tesoro, the Cueva de la Victoria, Villa Antiopa, the Casa Fuerte Bezmiliana, and the historic Torres Almenaras.
This intervention also constitutes "the first step of a process that will subsequently continue with the musealisation of the space that will offer an immersive and integrative journey, in line with the experience developed in Villa Antiopa," the mayor added. The aim is for visitors to be able to "transport themselves to the daily life and traditions of the locality during the first half of the 20th century."
The Museum of Popular Arts of Benagalbón is a space dedicated to preserving and disseminating the roots, customs, and cultural traditions of the municipality. With this action, facilities that have long needed an update will be modernised, improving the experience for locals and visitors and reinforcing its role as a reference for local ethnographic heritage.
