The municipality commemorates the establishment of its first Town Hall in Benagalbón on 28 August with a recognition of the archaeologist and director of the Nerja Museum.
Rincón de la Victoria will celebrate the 191st anniversary of the municipality's establishment on 28 August, a milestone that recalls the segregation of Benagalbón from Moclinejo in 1835, and this year will pay tribute to the archaeologist Juan Bautista Salado Escaño, a native of Benagalbón and the current director of the Nerja Museum.
The central event will take place at 20:30 at the Centre for the Study of Malagueño Folklore in Benagalbón and will feature the participation of municipal representatives and the cultural and community fabric of the area. This will be the fifth edition of a commemoration that has become established in the institutional and cultural calendar of the municipality.
The mayor, Francisco Salado, highlighted that “celebrating this anniversary means looking back at our roots and recognising the immense value of Benagalbón's history as a fundamental part of Rincón de la Victoria's identity.” The mayor also emphasised the honouree's connection to the municipality, where he directed the excavation of the Roman Villa of Torre de Benagalbón.
Juan Bautista Salado Escaño, affectionately known as 'Juanbu', was born in Benagalbón in 1972. He studied History at the University of Málaga and holds a master's degree in Museology. Specialising in the period of Al-Ándalus, he has developed an intense research and dissemination effort regarding Málaga's heritage, a work that is now being publicly recognised.
Councillor Pepi Carnero stated that “for Benagalbón it is very important to keep our history and traditions alive, and this year we wanted to particularly recognise a person closely linked to the research and dissemination of our heritage.”
The initiative to recover this anniversary arose from the research of the town's chronicler, Miguel Alba, and was subsequently promoted by the Bezmiliana Cultural Circle and the Town Hall. In previous editions, the recognition has gone to journalist Andrés García Maldonado, Miguel Alba himself, librarian Toñi Domínguez, and researcher Pedro Cantalejo.
The event will also serve to reclaim the role of Benagalbón as the first seat of the Town Hall, which remained there until its definitive relocation to Rincón de la Victoria in 1950. This year marks the fifth edition of the commemoration, with a programme starting at 20:30 and open to all residents.
