The province of Málaga has issued warnings for high temperatures. The inland area offers alternatives to the beach with pools and waterfalls of crystal-clear water in Tolox, Ardales and Estepona.
With the thermometer exceeding 35 degrees in much of the province of Málaga, the search for natural refuges is on the rise. Away from the coastal bustle, the inland region of Málaga hides spots where water has carved out natural pools ideal for a refreshing swim. Tolox, Ardales and Estepona concentrate some of the most popular locations, accessible via hiking routes and sharing a common denominator: crystal-clear water and shade from the mountains.
Charco de la Virgen: a classic in the Sierra de las Nieves
In the heart of the Sierra de las Nieves, just a stone's throw from the urban centre of Tolox, lies the Charco de la Virgen. This natural pool is part of the Río de los Caballos and can be reached after a short walk along a path that borders riverside vegetation and mountainous slopes.
The pool stands out for its size and the tranquility of its waters, fed by a small waterfall that creates a constant murmur. The wet rock surrounding the waterfall requires extra caution, as the moss makes it particularly slippery.
Very close by is the Fuente Amargosa spa, known for its sulphurous waters, making the visit an experience that combines swimming and thermal therapy.
Charco de la Olla: history and swimming in the Río Turón
In the municipality of Ardales, Charco de la Olla is another star destination inland. Its waters come from the Río Turón and the pool is deep enough for comfortable swimming in its central part.
The site retains a significant historical footprint: the waters that now fill the pond once powered three mills, a testament to the relationship between the river and human activity. Additionally, from the upper part of the area, the remains of the Turón castle can be seen, adding a heritage component to the day.
The riverside vegetation and the rock formations surrounding the pool complete a landscape that varies according to the season and water flow. The locals of Ardales have frequented it for ages, and in summer it becomes a meeting point for those seeking coolness without straying too far.
El Chorro de Estepona: a hidden gem on the Costa del Sol
In the municipality of Estepona, although away from the coast, lies the Chorro de Estepona, a waterfall that forms a natural pool surrounded by lush vegetation. Access requires a medium-difficulty hiking route, but the reward is a swim in crystal-clear waters with the sound of the waterfall in the background.
This site is less known than the previous ones, which ensures greater tranquility even on the busiest days. The shade of the trees and the humidity of the surroundings create a microclimate that alleviates the heat.
The Málaga Provincial Council recommends exercising caution in all these natural spaces: do not swim in unmarked areas, avoid jumping from rocks, and wear appropriate footwear to prevent slips. Additionally, remember the importance of not leaving waste and respecting the environment.
With the heatwave in effect, these spots become a real alternative to overcrowded beaches. However, those who arrive early find the best spots: attendance increases from mid-morning onwards, and parking nearby can be a challenge.
