The town of Málaga has been the subject of significant investment by the Junta de Andalucía, which has allocated a total of €85.8 million since 2019 for the conservation, maintenance, and restoration of watercourses. The delegate of the Andalusian Government, Patricia Navarro, visited the emergency works in Tolox, a municipality particularly affected by recent rains.
Historic investment for hydraulic safety
During her visit, Patricia Navarro highlighted that this figure is historic and reflects the commitment of the Andalusian Government to the safety of people and the protection of municipalities. The total investment includes both ordinary and emergency actions due to extreme weather phenomena, which have increased in frequency and intensity.
Navarro pointed out that of the €85.8 million, €30.6 million corresponds to the maintenance and conservation of watercourses, while €12.5 million was allocated to emergency works associated with specific climatic events. Additionally, €35.3 million has been mobilised to repair damage caused by heavy rains at the end of 2025 and storms at the beginning of 2026.
Actions in Tolox and other municipalities
In Tolox, the Junta is carrying out emergency works amounting to €1.46 million. The works, which are already underway, cover 13 sections of four watercourses and focus on the repair of riprap, bank protection, water diversion, and cleaning of watercourses.
The actions will not only benefit Tolox but will extend to a total of 38 municipalities in Málaga, restoring hydraulic capacity and repairing damaged infrastructure. The delegate emphasised the importance of acting preventively and swiftly in emergencies, thus ensuring the safety of citizens and the agricultural economic activity of the region.
This effort responds to a continuous planning of maintenance and conservation of watercourses, ensuring preparedness for future episodes of torrential rains. Navarro concluded that the Government's commitment to Málaga is clear through this investment, which multiplies by ten the amount made in the previous period from 2015 to 2018.
