The Cameroonian midfielder, who played for FC Barcelona and Real Betis, is the fifth signing for the Málaga team for the 26/27 season.
Juventud Torremolinos announced on Wednesday the signing of Wilfrid Kaptoum, a 29-year-old midfielder with a history at FC Barcelona and Real Betis. The Cameroonian arrives from Cacereño, where he played since February, and signs for one season with an option for another. He is the fifth addition to the Málaga side for the 26/27 season, in which they face their second year in Primera RFEF.
A globetrotter with pedigree
Kaptoum emerged from the FC Barcelona academy, where he lifted the Copa del Rey in the 15/16 season and made his Champions League debut. He also won the Youth League in 13/14. In 2018, Real Betis took a chance on him, although he never fully established himself despite playing in LaLiga. Since then, he has been a true globetrotter: he has played in the United States, Cyprus, Greece, Almería, Las Palmas, Nástic, and, last February, at Cacereño.
Now, the midfielder will try his luck in Torremolinos with the hope of finally settling in a city. "He is a player with experience and quality, who will give us a lot of balance in midfield," said the club's sporting director.
"Kaptoum has an enviable career and we are sure he will bring his experience to a young team,"he added.
An ambitious project at El Pozuelo
Juventud Torremolinos is not holding back for the upcoming season. After narrowly avoiding relegation last season — finishing just one point above the drop zone — the aim is to establish themselves in the third tier. The offices at El Pozuelo are working tirelessly to assemble a competitive team. Kaptoum joins four other notable signings: Dioni Villalba, former Málaga CF player and all-time top scorer in Primera RFEF with 192 goals; Cristian Rodríguez, also a former Málaga player and a product of Atlético de Madrid's academy; Javi Belman, a 27-year-old goalkeeper with six seasons in Real Madrid's lower categories; and Dominique Moubeke, a 20-year-old promising talent from Recreativo Granada.
For the fans in Torremolinos, these signings represent a clear step up in quality. "We want the fans to enjoy and feel proud of their team," declared the coach.
"With these signings, we aim to look upwards and not suffer like last year,"he added with a smile.
The club hopes that Kaptoum's experience, combined with that of Dioni and others, will help the younger players grow. The Cameroonian, who has played on three continents, could make his debut in the first pre-season match, scheduled for mid-August. Meanwhile, the squad continues to take shape: at least two or three more signings are expected before the transfer window closes.
Juventud Torremolinos will play their home matches at Estadio El Pozuelo, which has a capacity of 3,000 spectators. Season tickets for the new season are already on sale, with prices ranging from 100 to 200 euros. Undoubtedly, an exciting project for a fanbase that dreams of not facing difficulties.
