The Town Hall of Fuengirola is implementing new environmental and technological actions as part of the Sustainable Tourism Plan, which includes green canopies at taxi ranks and clean air corridors.

The Town Hall of Fuengirola has launched new environmental and technological actions to move towards a more sustainable tourism model. The measures, included in Axis 1 of the Sustainable Tourism Plan, account for 16.56% of the total budget of the plan.

The Councillor for Innovation, Isabel González, explained that the aim is "to make Fuengirola a more environmentally friendly destination, better prepared to face future challenges, without losing sight of the well-being of our residents and the quality of the experience for those who visit us."

Among the initiatives is the installation of green canopies at various taxi ranks in the municipality. This measure, based on natural solutions, reduces the impact of high temperatures, improves the comfort of users and professionals in the sector, and contributes to the city's adaptation to climate change.

Clean air corridors and waste collection

Another of the most innovative actions is the creation of Clean Air Corridors, a pioneering project that incorporates environmental purification technology in one of the city's main transport nodes. This action improves air quality in an area with a high influx of people and reinforces the municipal commitment to innovation applied to sustainability.

Additionally, the Town Hall has launched a specific waste collection service in the main tourist areas with a higher concentration of hospitality, restaurant, and retail establishments. This measure complements the municipal bio-waste collection system, promotes recycling, and helps maintain a cleaner and more cared-for image of the destination.

The councillor emphasized that these actions "are not isolated initiatives, but rather continue the work that the Town Hall has been developing for years" in sustainability, accessibility, tourist quality, and digital transformation. She recalled that the plan is supported by projects such as the Strategic Plan for Accessible Tourism, the Municipal Plan for Tourist Quality, or the Sustainable and Integrated Urban Development Strategy (EDUSI).

Benefits for residents and visitors

"Sustainability goes far beyond environmental protection. It also means providing higher quality public spaces, improving the lives of our residents, and ensuring that those who choose Fuengirola enjoy a more comfortable, healthy, and competitive destination," González stated.

The councillor highlighted that the Sustainable Tourism Plan is "a fundamental tool for continuing to transform the city from a sustainable perspective," aligned with the objectives of the Recovery, Transformation, and Resilience Plan and funded by Next Generation EU funds.

"We will continue to promote actions that allow us to consolidate a quality, innovative, and environmentally respectful tourism model, generating environmental, social, and economic benefits for the entire city," concluded the municipal official.

For the residents of Fuengirola, these measures translate into a tangible improvement of their environment: cooler taxi ranks, cleaner air in high-traffic areas, and cleaner streets in tourist spots. The actions are already underway and are expected to be completed over the coming months, coinciding with the high tourist season.
