The City Council of Málaga has announced an agreement to open a space for the Museo Casa Natal Picasso in Round Rock (Texas), featuring two annual exhibitions over five years.
The Museo Casa Natal Picasso, located in the capital of Málaga, will cross the Atlantic. The City Council of Málaga has sealed a letter of intent to establish an exhibition space in Round Rock, a Texas city about 30 kilometers from Austin. Named 'Birthing Picasso', it will occupy a room in the City Arts Center, a building set to open in early 2026 that meets all safety and conservation requirements for housing artworks.
The agreement, which is proposed for an initial period of five years with the possibility of extension, includes the organization of two temporary exhibitions each year featuring works from the Málaga museum. The Texas side will cover transportation, insurance, and travel costs for the artworks, in addition to contributing 50,000 euros for each exhibition. The mayor of Málaga, Francisco de la Torre, highlighted during the presentation that this initiative "opens a unique window for the international projection of Picasso's work from his hometown."
Texas Delegation in Málaga
Also attending the presentation were the mayor, the councillor for Culture and Historical Heritage, Mariana Pineda; the director of the Public Agency for the management of the Casa Natal of Pablo Ruiz Picasso, Luis Lafuente; and the president of the Texas-European Chamber of Commerce Foundation, Eduardo Galindo. Galindo leads a delegation of 15 representatives from Texas who will remain in Málaga until this Thursday. During the event, a video featuring a message from the mayor of Round Rock, Craig Morgan, was also shown.
The space will share its location with Málaga House, a project managed by the Texas-European Chamber of Commerce focused on technological and business exchanges between Texas and Málaga. The initiative was born during the South by Southwest festival in 2026, when the Round Rock Chamber of Commerce and the Texas-European Chamber of Commerce Foundation announced their intention to establish a direct cultural connection between Texas and Málaga. The Málaga native Francisco Sánchez Guitard is involved in this foundation, acting as a liaison with the Museo Casa Natal Picasso.
First Exhibition in November
The first planned exhibition will be titled 'Dialogues with Picasso' and will be curated by Mario Virgilio Montañez. It will bring together nearly fifty works on paper by Pablo Picasso alongside pieces from contemporary artists in the collection of the Museo Casa Natal. Round Rock has expressed its intention to inaugurate it on November 5.
In addition to the exhibition programming, the project includes lectures, workshops, and educational activities, aiming to maintain a stable cultural exchange between both territories. The City Council and its Texas partners seek to establish ties beyond the cultural realm, also incorporating the academic and business aspects already represented by Málaga House in the same building.
For the people of Málaga, this agreement represents an opportunity to see how the legacy of their most universal artist crosses the Atlantic regularly. And, in the process, for Texans to discover that Picasso is not just a museum name, but the identity mark of a city that continues to export talent.
