A 28-year-old man has been arrested after confessing to strangling his 25-year-old partner in their home in Campillos, Málaga. The victim had no prior complaints against him, and both were in the VioGén system for previous relationships.

The Guardia Civil has arrested a 28-year-old man accused of strangling his 25-year-old partner to death in the home they shared in Campillos, a town in the Guadalteba region of Málaga province. The suspect walked into the Guardia Civil station in Martos, Jaén, on Wednesday and confessed that he might have killed his partner. Officers then went to the home and found the woman dead with signs of strangulation, leading to the man's immediate arrest.

According to sources close to the investigation, there were no prior complaints of gender violence between the couple. However, both were registered in the Sistema VioGén, a system that monitors victims and aggressors in gender violence cases, but for previous relationships. This absence of previous reports within the current relationship has surprised investigators.

The Delegation of the Government against Gender Violence has stated they are gathering data to confirm the nature of the crime as a case of machista violence. If confirmed, it would be the sixth such murder in the province of Málaga this year and the twelfth in Andalusia. Nationwide, at least 40 women have been killed by their partners or ex-partners in Spain since January, according to official statistics, bringing the total since records began to 1,331.

In response to the tragedy, the City Council of Campillos has declared three days of official mourning. In a statement published on social media, the council expressed its "firmest condemnation and absolute repulsion" and called for a gathering on Thursday at 12:00 p.m. at the town hall, where a minute of silence will be held in memory of the victim. The council described the crime as "terrible" and emphasized that it "shakes us as a town and reminds us of the most painful reality of gender violence: a violence that kills, destroys families, and breaks coexistence in our communities."

For her part, Loles López, the regional minister for Social Inclusion, Youth, Families and Equality of the Junta de Andalucía, condemned the "malignant virus" of machista violence. "How much powerlessness!" she wrote on social media, calling for the entire society to be involved in eradicating this scourge.

This case highlights the persistent issue of gender violence in Spain. Despite prevention campaigns and the VioGén system, murders continue to occur. The suspect, who is now in police custody, is expected to be brought before a judge in the coming days. The investigation continues to clarify the circumstances that led to this tragedy.

For those affected by gender violence, the national hotline 016 is available 24/7, as well as WhatsApp at 600 000 016 and email 016-online@igualdad.gob.es. Calls to 016 are confidential and do not show up on phone bills, but precautions should be taken to ensure safety.
