After 68 years serving the community, Papelería San Agustín in Antequera closed its doors on June 26, 2026. The Aragón Cruces brothers retired, ending a family business that began in 1958.

The last customer walked out of Papelería San Agustín at around 8 p.m. on Friday, June 26, 2026, as brothers Juan Carlos and Ignacio Aragón Cruces pulled down the metal shutter for the final time. The scene was emotional: a few tears, hugs, and words of gratitude from customers who had frequented the store for decades.

The closure marks the end of a retail institution that began in 1958, when Francisco Aragón Artacho opened a small stationery shop in the San Agustín casillas. Over the years, the business moved twice before settling at the corner of Infante don Fernando and San Agustín streets in August 1981—a location it occupied for 45 years.

Juan Carlos Aragón Cruces started helping at age 12, collecting invoices on Saturday afternoons. In 1975, his father fell ill with phlebitis, and Juan Carlos and his brother Pepe (now deceased) took over. Ignacio joined after military service in 1985. The shop expanded its stock to include books, photocopies, and even Christmas nativity scenes, becoming a community hub.

The decision to close came after Juan Carlos received his retirement letter from Social Security. The brothers had announced their intention to shut down in late 2025, and the final day arrived on June 26. “We want to thank all of Antequera, our customers, friends, and neighbors for accompanying us on this journey,” they said. “This morning we had a few tears, but in the end, we celebrated the day in a big way.”

The closure echoes the fate of other historic shops in Spanish towns that have disappeared due to retirement and changing retail habits. In Antequera, Papelería San Agustín was one of the last family-run stationery stores. Its departure leaves a void at a corner that will no longer be the same.

For those who still need stationery supplies, other shops in the city center remain open, but none carry the sentimental weight of Papelería San Agustín. The premises at Infante don Fernando, 7 are now empty, awaiting a new tenant.
