Mayor Manolo Barón leads a protest at the Health Centre in Antequera following the assault suffered by a doctor last Sunday.
The mayor of Antequera, Manolo Barón, expressed his support on Tuesday for the doctor assaulted last Sunday at the clinic in Villanueva del Rosario. He did so at a protest convened in the access area of the Health Centre on Avenida de la Estación, where he was accompanied by members of the municipal government team.
The event was also attended by the territorial delegate for Health of the Junta in Málaga, Carlos Bautista, and the manager of the North Málaga Hospital Area, Belén Jiménez. Alongside them, dozens of healthcare professionals and institutional representatives wanted to show their rejection of the violence suffered by the doctor.
Unanimous condemnation of violence against healthcare workers
Manolo Barón conveyed the solidarity of the city of Antequera to the assaulted doctor and wished her a swift recovery, both physically and mentally. The incident occurred on Sunday when the doctor was assaulted while providing care at the emergency point of the clinic in Villanueva del Rosario.
The mayor expressed his "absolute rejection" of any type of assault, threat or intimidation against doctors, nurses, technicians, assistants or any other healthcare professional. "Those who care for all of us deserve respect, protection and recognition, never violence," he emphasised.
Barón stressed the need to maintain a firm and unanimous stance against such behaviours. "No circumstance justifies an assault on a healthcare professional who is fulfilling their duty, attending to a person in need of help and providing an essential public service," he added.
Support for healthcare workers in the North Málaga Area
The mayor wanted to highlight the daily work of healthcare professionals in the North Málaga Health Area, emphasising their dedication to service and their closeness to the residents of Antequera and the municipalities in the region. "Our city wants to stand today with the assaulted doctor, her colleagues and all healthcare workers who, often in difficult situations, continue to give their best to care for others," he noted.
The Antequera City Council thus joins the institutional condemnation of this assault and reaffirms its commitment to defending public services and the dignity of healthcare professionals. For the residents of the region, this act sends a clear message: violence against those who care for health has no place in society.
This Tuesday's protest is not an isolated event. In recent years, assaults on healthcare workers have become an increasing concern. According to data from the Aggression Observatory of the Medical Organisation, over 600 assaults on doctors were recorded across Spain in 2025, a figure that continues to rise. Such acts aim to raise awareness among the population and pressure for effective protective measures to be adopted.
The clinic in Villanueva del Rosario, where the assault occurred, serves a population of about 3,500 inhabitants. The assaulted doctor, whose identity has not been disclosed, is in the process of recovery. The Antequera City Council has announced that it will continue to collaborate with the Junta de Andalucía to enhance security in the healthcare centres of the region.
