The City Council of Antequera has launched a new edition of 'Antequera Luz de Luna', a cultural and leisure program that will run until September with 32 free activities. The initiative aims to take advantage of the cooler night temperatures to provide an alternative for locals and tourists, with offerings ranging from yoga next to the Dolmen of Menga to observing the Perseids in El Torcal.

Yoga, tastings, and theatrical visits

The Councillor for Heritage, Ana Cebrián, has detailed that the program retains its essence of celebrating all activities at sunset. Among the new features is a theatrical visit to the Roman Villa of the Antequera station, a space that recently opened its doors and will be available for night tours for the first time.

"A theatrical visit to the Roman Villa of the Antequera station, which we opened very recently, and that we will be able to do at night and also in a theatrical format," Cebrián pointed out.

Additionally, attendees can enjoy routes through the Church of Santo Domingo, oil tastings with the Antequera designation of origin at the city museum, and outdoor yoga sessions. Most activities require prior reservation due to limited capacity, according to the council.

Fighting against tourist seasonality

The 'Antequera Luz de Luna' program has become a key tool for de-seasonalising tourism in the city. According to Cebrián, the initiative complements the offerings of the Costa del Sol, allowing visitors to combine beach time during the day with culture, heritage, and gastronomy at night.

"It has helped us to have a very good number of visits and overnight stays during the summer," the councillor stated. The night offerings aim to attract a diverse audience, from families to young people, and to establish Antequera as a key inland destination.

Antequera Light Fest for UNESCO's tenth anniversary

This summer is particularly significant as it marks the tenth anniversary of the declaration of the Dolmens Site as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. To celebrate, the Antequera Light Fest will take place on July 17 and 18, a festival that combines light, technology, and heritage with projections, video mapping, and theatrical performances at iconic monuments.

Last year, the event attracted over 40,000 people in two nights, Cebrián recalled. As a new feature, this edition will include a food truck festival at the Paseo Real to expand the gastronomic offerings. "In the end, the heritage is global and belongs to everyone, and we do this for that reason," the councillor invited.

The activities of the 'Antequera Luz de Luna' program can be consulted on the Antequera tourism website. Most are free, but prior reservation is necessary to ensure capacity and the quality of the experience.
