The Espacio Sacristía of the former church of San Juan de Dios in Antequera presents 'Topography of Gesture', an exhibition by the Málaga photographer Noelia García Bandera that will be open until January 31, 2027.
The Málaga artist Noelia García Bandera showcases her latest work in one of the most unique corners of Antequera. The Espacio Sacristía of the former church of San Juan de Dios hosts the exhibition 'Topography of Gesture', a display that invites a rethinking of photography as a physical object and not just as a flat image.
The proposal, which can be visited until January 31, 2027, brings together a series of works that play with folds, wrinkles, and textile materials to transform traditional photography into a piece with volume. The result is a visual experience that questions the boundaries between what is seen and what is hidden.
Contemporary Art in a Baroque Setting
The exhibition is structured around two lines of research that the artist has developed over the past few years: 'Camouflage' and 'Topography of Gesture'. Both emerged from an artistic residency in the Valle del Genal, where García Bandera began to explore the human footprint on the landscape.
The use of nets and other elements that distort the image is a constant in her work. The artist precisely seeks that blurred boundary between the visible and the invisible, between what is shown and what is hidden. For the visitor, each work becomes a visual puzzle that invites a second look.
The Councillor for Culture of Antequera, José Medina Galeote, highlighted during the presentation that the Espacio Sacristía remains committed to more experimental art. “This place is ideal for proposals that challenge the viewer's gaze and connect with the building's tradition,” he noted.
A Historic Space for 21st Century Art
The former church of San Juan de Dios, from the 18th century, is a setting that in itself deserves a visit. The combination of Andalusian Baroque with García Bandera's contemporary works creates a contrast that the artist has skillfully exploited. This is not the first time the Espacio Sacristía has embraced such dialogues: since its rehabilitation as an exhibition space, it has hosted proposals in photography, installation, and performance.
For the residents of Antequera and the surrounding area, the exhibition represents an opportunity to access quality contemporary art without leaving the province. And for tourists visiting in the coming months, it provides yet another reason to wander through the streets of the historic centre.
The exhibition will remain open from Tuesday to Saturday from 10:00 to 14:00 and from 17:00 to 20:00, and Sundays from 10:00 to 14:00. Closed on Mondays. Admission is free.
