Málaga artist Noelia García Bandera exhibits at the Espacio Sacristía de San Juan de Dios until January 31, 2027. The exhibition combines contemporary photography, landscape, and baroque heritage.
The Espacio Sacristía of the San Juan de Dios church in Antequera hosts the exhibition 'Topography of Gesture', by Málaga photographer Noelia García Bandera, starting this Friday. The exhibition, which can be visited until January 31, 2027, proposes a dialogue between contemporary photography, landscape, camouflage, and the baroque heritage of the building.
An artist who folds photography
Noelia García Bandera, a professor at the San Telmo School of Art in Málaga, has been researching the possibilities of photography beyond the flat image for years. In this exhibition, she presents two series: 'Camouflage' and 'Topography of Gesture', where the fold, wrinkle, and camouflage net become tools to create volume.
As explained by the Councillor for Culture, José Medina Galeote, during the presentation, the artist "has been able to delve into the possibilities of photography to also turn it into an artistic object." García Bandera's work generates "an exceptional orography of photography, which ceases to be merely two-dimensional to acquire an almost three-dimensional presence," he added.
The landscape as the protagonist
The exhibition arises from an artistic residency that the author undertook in 2018 in the Valle del Genal, in the Serranía de Ronda. There, she began to confront the landscape "not only as a background but also as a protagonist," García Bandera herself pointed out during the press conference.
The artist explained that her research stems from the intersection of fiction and reality through the genre of landscape, evolving from camouflage to gesture. "Camouflage is also a gesture," she stated, referring to the use of nets and camouflage meshes that, beyond their initial function, acquire an aesthetic and symbolic dimension in her work.
"Photography does not have to be limited to the two traditional dimensions, but can become a field of action, reflection, and dialogue"
This is how the artist expressed herself, thanking the Culture Area of the Antequera City Council for the invitation to exhibit in "such a special space." She highlighted the coexistence that occurs between contemporary heritage and the baroque heritage of San Juan de Dios.
A unique space for experimental art
The Espacio Sacristía de San Juan de Dios is a room located in a top-level heritage environment. José Medina emphasized that "it once again hosts a new exhibition in a very experimental space," consolidating itself as a reference for innovative artistic proposals in the city.
For visitors, the exhibition offers a unique opportunity to see how photography transforms into a three-dimensional object. García Bandera's works alter the traditional photographic image and pose a game between the visible and the hidden, inviting the viewer to discover new perspectives.
The exhibition can be visited from Tuesday to Sunday in the morning and afternoon, with free entry. A perfect occasion to get lost among photographic folds and wrinkles in the heart of Antequera. However, those expecting flat photos in the usual sense should be warned: here, the image breaks out of the frame.
