Fuengirola Local Police have arrested a man for a public health offence after finding 216 grams of hashish, 307 grams of marijuana, and 343 cannabis cigarettes ready for sale in a café. The intervention took place during a routine inspection for construction work on Héroes de Baler street.
What began as an inspection for public works turned into a drug raid in the heart of Fuengirola. Local Police officers arrived at a premises on Héroes de Baler street to check if the owner was illegally occupying the pavement with the works, but upon entering, they encountered something quite different: an alleged drug sales point.
The establishment's owner, who was also operating as a café without the necessary licence, was caught in the act when the officers detected the presence of drugs already prepared for distribution. In total, the police seized 216 grams of hashish, 307 grams of marijuana, and no less than 343 marijuana cigarettes ready for immediate consumption.
A parallel business in the urban centre
According to the Fuengirola City Council, the drugs were found inside the premises, ready for retail sale. The officers filed several administrative complaints, including one for operating without the corresponding municipal licence, as the establishment was functioning as a café without being registered as such. The arrested individual was transferred to the National Police facilities, where he was placed at the disposal of the judiciary along with the proceedings and the seized drugs.
The news has surprised local residents, who claim not to have noticed any unusual activity in the establishment. Fuengirola is no stranger to such operations: last May, the National Police dismantled two drug sales points operating 24 hours a day in the Los Núcleos neighbourhood, resulting in six arrests and the seizure of nearly three kilos of cocaine, 118 grams of hashish, and over 13,000 euros in cash.
The routine that uncovered the plot
The curious aspect of the case is that the investigation did not stem from a drug trafficking alert, but from a simple urban inspection. The officers visited the premises to verify some construction work and determine if the public space was being illegally occupied. Upon entering, the smell and arrangement of the merchandise revealed the hidden business. This shows that sometimes, chance plays a key role in the fight against drug dealing.
For the average citizen, the intervention provides a sigh of relief: one less sales point in the urban area, although the underlying problem remains. The Local Police remind that any suspicion of illegal activity can be reported to 092, and that community cooperation is essential.
The arrested individual, whose identity has not been disclosed, will be brought before a judge in the coming hours. He is charged with a public health offence and could face prison sentences of three to six years, according to the Penal Code. Meanwhile, the premises remain sealed pending a decision from the judicial authority regarding its future.
