The Town Hall of Fuengirola has completed the renewal of the pavement on the steepest section of Camino de las Cañadas, featuring non-slip surfacing. This initiative responds to a community request and will be completed with the planting of trees after the summer.
The Town Hall of Fuengirola has announced the completion of improvement works on Camino de las Cañadas, a road that marks the municipal boundaries of Fuengirola and Mijas. The project, focused on the steepest section, involved replacing the old pavement with a high-adhesion tactile paving, aimed at reducing the risk of slips and facilitating transit for people with reduced mobility.
The Councillor for Infrastructure, José Sánchez, visited the area on Tuesday to assess the results of the works, which respond to a request made by residents during a recent meeting with the mayor. As the councillor explained, each town hall is responsible for one of the pavements on this road, and the intervention has been carried out on the section corresponding to Fuengirola.
“Camino de las Cañadas is a unique road, as it marks the municipal boundaries of Fuengirola and Mijas. Each town hall is responsible for one of the pavements, and therefore, we have acted on the section that corresponds to our municipality to address a request made by residents just a few weeks ago,” Sánchez stated.
The steepest point had issues with slipping, especially on rainy days or after cleaning work. The new pavement has a much lower slip index, which represents a significant improvement in safety, particularly for elderly people. Additionally, the damaged areas have been repaired up to the connection with Viñuela Street, and the underside of the bridge and urban furniture have been painted.
The project will be completed after the summer with the planting of several trees, following the recommendations of the municipal Urban Ecology technicians. Sánchez indicated that this is a commitment made to the residents and will be executed once the hottest months are over to ensure the development of the species.
The councillor highlighted the importance of these local interventions: “they improve accessibility, enhance safety, and contribute to making Fuengirola an increasingly friendly city.” Residents in the area will see an improvement in their quality of life with safer pavement and a renewed environment, while the new trees will provide shade and coolness during the summer months.
