The Málaga Clinical Hospital has held a day dedicated to Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS), bringing together patients, families, and professionals to discuss various topics related to the disease.

Meeting with Patients and Professionals

This event, marking the fifth edition of the day, took place at the Virgen de la Victoria University Hospital Complex, under the slogan 'Bringing Us Closer to Your Reality'. Its main objective was to answer common questions about ALS and provide a space to share experiences from different perspectives.

Currently, around 60 patients receive care in the ALS circuit of the Clinical Hospital, where professionals from various fields work to meet their care needs. This care group has been operational for over 15 years, ensuring comprehensive treatment that minimizes unnecessary trips to the hospital.

Workshops and Debate

The day began with an inaugural event featuring the medical director, Luciana Jiménez, the nursing director, Ángel González, and the deputy director of Citizen Care, Guillermo García. Following this, various workshops focused on the needs of those affected by ALS were held.

In the first workshop, titled 'Bringing Us Closer to Your Daily Life', moderated by the Endocrinology and Nutrition nurse, Natalia Montero, the organisation of patient care at home was discussed. A video reflecting the daily challenges faced by these patients was also shown.

The second workshop, 'Bringing Us Closer to Your Concerns', moderated by neurologist Mª Isabel Chamorro, focused on scientific updates and clinical trials related to ALS. Information was presented on the genetic approach to the disease by Silvia Agustina García and Ángela García de la Torre.

In the third workshop, moderated by respiratory physiotherapist Virginia Peña, collaboration with patient associations was debated. Representatives from organisations such as ELA Andalucía and BenalELA participated, along with Francisco Montoro from Sácale la lengua a la ELA.

Finally, the fourth workshop, 'Bringing Us Closer to Your Questions', coordinated by Elma Avanessi, allowed patients to ask questions that were answered by a multidisciplinary team. The session concluded with an interactive activity using the Kahoot platform.

The organisers highlighted the importance of such days, which strengthen the commitment of the Virgen de la Victoria University Clinical Hospital to the humanisation of care and the well-being of patients and their families.
