Adrián Fernández, 25 years old and a resident of Cártama, has launched a campaign on GoFundMe to raise €500,000 to cover therapies and a barrier-free home in the countryside. He has raised nearly €9,000.
Adrián Fernández, a young man of 25 years from Cártama, has initiated a fundraising campaign on GoFundMe to gather €500,000 to cover the care required by amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) and to purchase an adapted home in the countryside. The initiative, according to Diario Sur, has so far achieved nearly €9,000.
The goal of the set amount, explains Adrián himself on the platform, is to cover "the real reflection of what it costs to face ALS in the long term, to cover uninterrupted care and, above all, to make that house in the countryside a reality without leaving my family financially overwhelmed".
"I want to buy time: to make the most of each day, to go on trips, to continue enjoying my passion for motors and to live unforgettable experiences with my family and friends"
The young man details that the disease has "an enormous daily cost that public aid barely covers". Among the expenses he faces are physiotherapy sessions to reduce muscle stiffness caused by spasticity, speech therapy to maintain his voice and ability to communicate, respiratory physiotherapy to maintain lung capacity, and the technical aids and adaptations he needs to preserve his independence.
Adrián refuses to let his life be limited to medical bills and a survival routine. "ALS paralyses the body, but leaves the desire to live, to feel, and to laugh intact," he asserts. For this reason, part of the money raised will go towards a wish list with which he wants to make the most of his time with his loved ones.
The main project is to acquire a home in the countryside. "We need a home that is completely flat and barrier-free, where my wheelchair and the equipment I may need in the future are not an obstacle, but part of an adapted and peaceful environment," he describes. In his opinion, financing that house means ensuring a refuge for him and his family against the harshness of the diagnosis.
The resident of Cártama is not just asking for a donation, but for "you to be part of my team in this fight". Additionally, the money received by his NGO Neuronas con Chispa will be allocated to research.
His story began in December 2022, when he suffered a bicycle accident. From then on, his body began to fail, and in May 2023, tests, analyses, and MRIs began. He was hospitalised three times until in January 2025 he was diagnosed with ALS. "This diagnosis was a cold shower that halts life abruptly and fills you with doubts and fears. But in my mind, giving up has never been an option," he recounts.
Before the illness, Adrián worked in his own detailed car cleaning business, an activity he combined with his passion for the world of motors. Now he trains daily to be in the best possible condition for a future treatment, such as the pill against ALS being tested at the CSIC.
Donations can be made through the GoFundMe platform, where the campaign remains active with a goal of €500,000.
