The mayor of Vélez-Málaga has resigned from any municipal remuneration effective from his inauguration on October 28.
The General Registry of the Vélez-Málaga Town Hall received on Wednesday the document in which the mayor, Jesús María Claros, formalises his resignation from receiving any municipal remuneration. The resignation is retroactive and applies from October 28, the day he took office.
The resignation includes any remuneration derived from the Mayor's office and compensation for attendance at plenary sessions and government boards. The mayor submitted the document personally at the Citizen Attention Office.
The measure is part of a package of political spending containment that the mayor announced on Tuesday. This package was presented to the ordinary plenary session on November 3 through an urgent motion, which also proposes reducing the remuneration of the members of the Corporation and trusted positions. According to the council, the estimated savings exceed 400,000 euros annually, which will be allocated to enhance street cleaning and expand washing throughout the municipality.
Claros has stated that "when I took on the responsibility of being mayor, I was clear that we should start making decisions that demonstrated our commitment to responsible management of public resources."
"Citizens expect decisions, responsibility, and above all, actions from their public representatives."
The mayor added that his commitment is for the Town Hall to allocate more resources to the streets, neighbourhoods, and services that the residents of Vélez-Málaga receive.
