In Málaga, the Councillor for Agriculture, Fishing, Water and Rural Development, Ramón Fernández-Pacheco, has emphasised in Parliament the relevance of water for the economic and social development of Andalusia.

During his speech, the councillor highlighted that the Andalusian government has invested over €2 billion in hydraulic infrastructure since 2019. This effort includes both the improvement of waterways and the modernisation of irrigation systems.

Commitment to Sustainable Development

Fernández-Pacheco emphasised that “water has been, is, and will be the absolute priority” of the Junta. He asserted that the Executive will continue to carry out new works alongside the modernisation and maintenance of existing infrastructure. Additionally, work is underway on the approval of the first Sustainable Irrigation Law of Andalusia, which aims to enhance the value of water in the agricultural sector.

As part of this commitment, investment in irrigation ponds will be encouraged, and the Parra and RegadíA plans will be developed, initiatives that were launched in the previous legislature.

Actions in Response to Emergencies

The councillor also highlighted the importance of hydraulic works as a guarantee against future droughts and as safety measures against heavy rains. Currently, works are being carried out with an investment of nearly €100 million in areas affected by storms at the beginning of the year, covering approximately 400 kilometres of waterways in four provinces: Almería, Cádiz, Granada, and Málaga.

Finally, Fernández-Pacheco expressed his concern over the lack of support from the Spanish Government, which has nearly a hundred state-competent works pending in Andalusia.
