The Fuengirola Fire Service periodically inspects the over 700 hydrants distributed throughout the municipality to ensure their operability in case of fire. Faults are reported to Gestagua for repair.
The Fire Prevention and Extinction Service of Fuengirola carries out regular inspections of the more than 700 hydrants spread across the municipal area. This preventive work aims to ensure that these devices are in perfect condition and ready for use in emergency situations.
The Councillor for Citizen Security, José Luis Ponce, and the head of the Fire Service, Julián Bueno, explained today that officials inspect these elements of the public network, which are reserved for emergencies. When a deficiency, fault, or possible leak is detected, it is reported to the water supply company, Gestagua, for repair.
“Fuengirola has a very extensive network of hydrants, I would say one of the largest in Andalusia. We have about 700 hydrants in a city of just ten square kilometres,” Ponce pointed out. The councillor highlighted that this infrastructure has been expanded and improved over the years and that, during street renovations, the installation of these devices is also considered among the underground infrastructures.
“This allows us that, if something happens on a street, the fire truck can receive water directly from the hydrant located in that area, without the need to make trips to refill the tank. This way we achieve an immediate and continuous response to an emergency,” he added.
Ponce emphasized the importance of maintaining this network in optimal conditions. “For it to be truly effective, proper maintenance is necessary. That’s why, among the tasks of our firefighters is also the inspection of these elements, to ensure that when they need to be used, they are in perfect condition,” he indicated.
For his part, Julián Bueno highlighted the preventive nature of these actions. “Prevention is the foundation of the Fire Service, because without it we could not manage the incidents that occur in the municipality with the same effectiveness and efficiency,” he noted.
The inspection of hydrants holds a prominent place within these tasks, especially in the face of large-scale fire situations. “It facilitates that, when we have an emergency of this nature, we do not need external water supplies, but rather the hydrant network itself can provide us with the necessary water to respond to the situation,” Bueno explained.
The inspections begin with a visual check of the hydrant's condition and all its elements. Subsequently, the firefighters open the device to verify that the flow and water circulation are adequate and sufficient to ensure its proper functioning.
When any anomaly is detected, Gestagua is notified to carry out the necessary repair work. Once the issue is resolved, the Firefighters check the hydrant again to verify that it is operational once more.
In this way, the City Council maintains an extensive and permanently supervised emergency water supply network, an essential resource to improve the Fire Service's response capacity to potential fires at any point in Fuengirola.
