The Fuengirola City Council has intensified since September the inspection and preventive cleaning of drains and stormwater collectors to avoid blockages and flooding in critical points of the city. So far this year, the municipal water service has cleaned 1,153 inspection wells, 11,058 drains, and over 46 kilometres of network.
The Fuengirola City Council has stepped up the cleaning of stormwater collectors and drains in the city since early September to prepare the network for the first autumn rains. The mayor Ana Mula presented this work alongside the manager of the municipal water service (Gestagua), Enrique Sánchez, and the fire chief, Julián Bueno.
The campaign focuses on areas identified as critical and those more prone to surface water accumulation during heavy rain. The aim is to prevent leaves, dirt, and waste from obstructing drainage and causing blockages or flooding in certain parts of the municipality.
So far this year, the municipal sanitation service has cleaned 1,153 inspection wells, 11,058 drains, and just over 46 kilometres of network. The mayor explained that these figures should be interpreted with nuance, as not all drains require the same cleaning frequency.
“Some may require several interventions throughout the year, even five, while others may not need any. It depends on the amount of dirt, leaves, waste, or other elements they accumulate, as well as their location and the sensitivity of the point in case a problem arises,” Mula noted.
The mayor insisted that any object thrown onto public roads can block these drainage elements and warned that this dirt can end up in waterways or the sea when carried away by rainwater or street cleaning.
For his part, Enrique Sánchez detailed that in these weeks, work is intensifying on the sanitation network and drains, which collect runoff water from the streets, and on the collectors, through which water is evacuated.
“It is very important that these drains are clean to be prepared to collect the large amount of water that can come with these first rains, which can be torrential,” Sánchez affirmed.
The work will continue until the end of the year and will progressively extend to complete the entire sanitation network of Fuengirola. In addition to this preventive campaign, the City Council maintains the upkeep of the sewage system and pumping stations in the municipality, for which it has two cleaning trucks operational throughout the year.
