The Councillor for Culture, Historical Heritage and Sport of the Junta de Andalucía, Patricia del Pozo, has reported that the cinemas in Málaga are at risk of losing €1.4 million due to a new requirement imposed by the Government of Spain. This change in the aid procedure for the maintenance of cinemas affects 14 cinemas in the province.
Consequences of the change in requirements
Del Pozo has pointed out that this last-minute change in the application process severely punishes the film exhibition sector. The complaint was made during the plenary session of the Andalusian Parliament, where the councillor highlighted that exhibition halls should not have to bear the lack of coordination between the ministries of Culture and Finance.
Until now, the established procedure only required the aid to be called before December 31, 2025, allowing for its resolution to take place in 2026. However, last August, the condition was added that the procedure must be resolved before the end of that same year.
Regional impact
According to the councillor, this change will affect a total of €1,416,666.67 allocated to support 112 exhibition halls in various Andalusian provinces. This makes Andalucía the most affected community by this new requirement, surpassing the Valencian Community and other regions.
Del Pozo has expressed her concern about the disproportion of the claim and has requested the central government to reverse this decision. The councillor has informed that a request for reconsideration has been submitted to annul the claim and ensure that the funds reach the cinemas in Andalucía.
Furthermore, she has emphasized the Junta's commitment to the film sector, highlighting the significant aid that has been doubled for the production of feature films and other projects, reaching a historic figure of nearly €6 million. This commitment reflects the intention to provide stability and predictability to the cultural sector.
