The Málaga City Council has published the new EMT ordinance, which raises the single fare to €1.50 and the airport journey to €4.00. Discounts for seniors, youth, and families are maintained, but onboard rules are tightened.
The Official Bulletin of the Province (BOP) published this Tuesday, July 7, 2026, the new ordinance of the Málaga Transport Company (EMT), which updates the fares and conditions for using urban buses in Málaga city.
The document, currently in the initial approval phase, establishes an increase in the ordinary fare, which rises from €1.30 to €1.50. The journey to the airport, via Line A, will cost €4.00, compared to the current €3.30.
Discounted fares and new passes
Despite the increase, the City Council maintains a wide range of reduced and free passes for specific groups. The Gold Card, aimed at those over 65 and individuals with a disability of 65% or more, is divided into three tiers based on income: free for pensions up to €1,025 per month; €9.95 for incomes between €1,025 and €1,445; and €27.00 for pensions above that.
Young people aged 16 to 25 and students aged 3 to 15 can access a flat rate of €27.00 per month, provided they are registered or studying in Málaga city. The free Annual Family Card allows one child under 12 to travel at no extra cost.
For the general user, the 10-trip Transfer Card rises to €8.40, and the unlimited monthly pass is set at €39.95. A new Annual Transport Card is also introduced for €290.00.
New onboard rules: no vaping and restrictions on scooters
The ordinance also tightens the rules for behaviour on buses. Smoking and vaping are prohibited inside the vehicles, as well as bringing non-foldable scooters or electric bicycles. Twin strollers will only be allowed if they do not block the aisle.
Travelling without a ticket or with an invalid ticket will result in a financial penalty and possible immediate expulsion from the bus. According to municipal sources, the regulation aims to improve the safety and comfort of passengers.
For Málaga residents, the most immediate change will be felt in their wallets: those paying cash for each journey will notice an increase of 20 cents. However, those using discounted passes will not see any change if they meet the requirements.
The ordinance is now in the period for objections before its final approval, expected in September. The City Council anticipates that the new fares will come into effect by the end of 2026.
