The Antonio Gala House Museum – La Baltasara hosted a new edition of the discussion dedicated to the Huevo Toro tomato, with over a hundred attendees.

More than a hundred people gathered last week in the gardens of the Antonio Gala House Museum – La Baltasara, in Alhaurín el Grande, to participate in a new edition of the discussion dedicated to the Huevo Toro tomato. Under the slogan “seasonality, Km 0 and sustainability”, the meeting brought together farmers, experts, institutions, and food enthusiasts around this emblematic product of the Guadalhorce Valley.

The day was inaugurated by the mayor of Alhaurín el Grande, Anthony Bermúdez, who was accompanied by the third vice president of the Málaga Provincial Council, Toñi Ledesma, and the president of the Huevo Toro Tomato Association, José Carlos García. The three agreed on highlighting the value of this meeting to continue promoting a product that is part of the identity of the municipality and the entire region.

Organised by the Huevo Toro Tomato Association and the Rural Development Group (GDR) Valle del Guadalhorce, in coordination with the Alhaurín el Grande Town Hall and with the collaboration of Sabor a Málaga from the Provincial Council, the discussion once again filled the venue. The debate, moderated by Diego Rivas, featured contributions from María Dolores Raigón, a doctor in Agronomic Engineering and professor of Soil Science and Agricultural Chemistry; José María Montero, director of the Protected Space and Land and Sea programmes at Canal Sur Televisión; and Jesús León, a specialised journalist from the portal Directo al Paladar.

Throughout the evening, topics such as the need to preserve local varieties, advance towards more sustainable production models, and strengthen the consumption of seasonal and local products were discussed. The speakers emphasised that the Huevo Toro tomato is an example of agriculture linked to the territory, quality, and respect for the environment.

“Traditional varieties constitute an agricultural and cultural heritage that must be protected,” the experts stated, insisting on the importance of conveying these values to the public through rigorous information and greater awareness about the origin of food.

The meeting also served to present the awards for the I Huevo Toro Tomato Poetry Contest, an initiative that has managed to unite gastronomy and culture and which received 76 poems from different parts of Spain. The reading of the awarded works provided a cultural highlight to an evening in which the Huevo Toro tomato demonstrated its ability to transcend the agricultural sphere and become a source of artistic inspiration.

With initiatives like this, the Alhaurín el Grande Town Hall reaffirms its commitment to promoting this product as one of the major gastronomic and agricultural references of the municipality and the Guadalhorce Valley. The recorded success of participation confirms the growing interest in an event that has established itself as a reference space for sharing knowledge and valuing the work of the agricultural sector.

The Huevo Toro tomato represents much more than a gastronomic product: its cultivation advocates a model based on seasonality, proximity, and sustainability, contributing to energising the local economy, favouring the conservation of traditional agricultural holdings, and reinforcing the identity of the Guadalhorce Valley as a territory producing quality food.

The discussion once again became a meeting space between scientific knowledge, farmers' experience, and gastronomic dissemination, generating an enriching dialogue about the challenges and opportunities facing the sector. Attendees agreed that events like this are essential for continuing to project the excellence of one of the most unique products in the province of Málaga.

For the residents of Alhaurín el Grande and the entire region, the Huevo Toro tomato is a symbol of identity and a driver of local development. The next edition of the discussion is already shaping up to be an unmissable event in the municipality's summer calendar.
