The territorial delegate for Sustainability and Environment, Gemma del Corral, emphasised the commitment of the Junta of Andalucía to the development of a circular economy during her participation in a forum focused on innovative solutions.
Commitment to Sustainability in Málaga
During the closing of the ‘Green Economy: Innovative Solutions Based on Circular Economy’ conference organised by Diario Sur, Del Corral stressed the importance of going beyond mere waste management to explore new opportunities in sustainability.
The delegate remarked that the circular economy has established itself as an essential tool for fostering a development model that is competitive, innovative, and respectful of natural resources. This approach, according to Del Corral, also entails the generation of green jobs.
Ongoing Initiatives and Projects
Andalucía, as highlighted by the delegate, was a pioneer in approving a Comprehensive Law on Circular Economy, thus positioning itself at the forefront of efficient resource management. This regulatory framework allows for a necessary transition towards more sustainable productive models.
Regarding the province of Málaga, the investment effort made by the Junta has been noteworthy, mobilising over 217 million euros in the last two years. These funds are aimed at improving selective collection and the treatment of bio-waste.
Additionally, incentives have been created for municipalities concerning selective collection and the improvement of green infrastructure, aligning with the Clean Points Plan, which has an investment of 1.2 million euros in the province. Del Corral expressed that “sustainability is built through collaboration between administrations, businesses, and citizens.”
Specific actions by the Junta, such as the sealing of landfills in Nerja and Torremolinos, have required an investment of nearly 10 million euros, aiming to recover degraded spaces and promote more sustainable waste management.
Moreover, Málaga participates in the Renocicla call, with 11.86 million euros from European funds, to promote innovative waste treatment related to renewable energies. This push also includes the reuse of forest residues and the creation of a new Biomass Treatment Centre in Yunquera.
Finally, the delegate noted that Andalucía is demonstrating that it is possible to combine economic growth with environmental protection, highlighting an investment of over 3.141 billion euros between 2023 and 2026 in initiatives to conserve natural resources and combat climate change.
