The Alhaurín de la Torre Town Hall has put out to tender the construction project for an underground car park with 133 spaces and the pedestrianisation of Isaac Peral Avenue, with a budget of €7.2 million financed by European funds.
The Alhaurín de la Torre Town Hall has taken a firm step towards transforming its historic centre. The construction project for an underground car park with 133 spaces and the redevelopment of Isaac Peral Avenue is now in the tendering phase, with a base budget of €7,242,847.98 (including VAT). The municipal forecast is to award the works this summer, following the approval in the Plenary last June of both the financing and the project and contracting file.
A deterrent parking facility to revitalise the historic centre
The mayor, Joaquín Villanova, has described the future parking facility and redevelopment as “impressive.” The mayor has indicated that the Town Hall is negotiating with local property owners to create more parking spaces on the same avenue through public-private collaboration, aiming to benefit pedestrians, residents, and businesses. This will be the second underground car park in Alhaurín de la Torre, after the one at Plaza de España, and the third publicly covered, including that of the 'José Molina Díaz' Health Centre.
The car park has been conceived as a “deterrent” parking facility in the historic centre, with direct connections to public transport stops as a shuttle service. It will be distributed across two underground levels, totalling a built area of 3,985 square metres (1,979 per level). Specifically, it will house 61 spaces in basement -1 and 72 in basement -2, with pedestrian access via stairs and an elevator.
Planned pedestrianisation and traffic cuts
This action is part of the Integrated Action Plan (PAI), approved to “recover the historic heart of Alhaurín de la Torre and strengthen its identity,” which receives aid worth €8,961,678 through the FEDER Financial Path (European Regional Development Fund). The redevelopment will complete a pedestrian route throughout the centre, which will include Isaac Peral Avenue, Ermita Street, San Sebastián Square, Málaga Street, and Avenida de España.
To carry out the works, a provisional traffic modification plan will be necessary, as traffic will be closed on the section of Isaac Peral between Tejar Street and the Donors roundabout (intersection with Avenida de la Vega). The Town Hall is preparing a communication campaign to inform citizens about the diversions and alternatives. The European Union is financing the project due to its benefits in improving air quality, reducing CO2 emissions, and promoting active mobility, in line with sustainable development policies and the gradual reduction of motor vehicles in urban centres.
The residents of Alhaurín de la Torre will see their historic centre completely transformed, with fewer cars and more space to walk. If the works are awarded this summer, they could begin at the end of the year, with an estimated execution period of several months. Meanwhile, the Town Hall recommends staying tuned to official channels for updates on traffic cuts and parking alternatives during the works.
