The works for the future peri-urban Benítez Park in Málaga, budgeted at nearly 12 million, face another delay, and the City Council has set its opening for November 2026.
The works to transform the old Benítez camp in Málaga into a metropolitan park, which were supposed to be completed by October 2025, are still unfinished. The execution, which began in February 2024 with an 18-month deadline, has now accumulated 30 months of work. The City Council assures that the project is at 90% completion and that the opening could take place next November, according to Diario Sur.
The delay is partly due to the modified project approved by the Municipal Urban Planning Management in December 2025, which extended the deadline by five months and increased the budget by €1.8 million, bringing it to €11.89 million. Among the changes are the discovery of buried debris from the military era of the site and a surface medium-voltage electrical network that required modifications to the drainage system.
The modifications also include improvements such as a new surface layer on the main road, more trees for shade, reinforcement of drainage following winter rains, metal pergolas instead of concrete, and a reinforced pavement with steel mesh for heavy vehicle traffic. Additionally, the dog park has been expanded to about 10,000 square meters, relocating it to the area between the internal road and the commuter train line.
The future park, covering 27 hectares, will be the largest green space in Málaga. It will feature a central square of 6,300 square meters, four kilometers of secondary routes, a sports area of 13,000 square meters with three basketball courts, one beach volleyball court, and 18 fitness machines, as well as a 980-meter road with 116 parking spaces. It will also benefit neighbouring municipalities such as Torremolinos and Alhaurín de la Torre.
