The Torrox council unanimously approves a motion from the PP requesting the Ministry of Transport to declare the El Morche link to the A-7 a priority action, with state funding and a timeline of three months.
The Torrox Town Hall has once again unanimously demanded that the central Government construct a direct link between El Morche and the Mediterranean motorway (A-7). The council approved this Monday, in the postponed ordinary session of August, a motion from the PP that urges the Ministry of Transport and Sustainable Mobility to promote "as a priority and urgently" the technical studies and drafting of the project, as reported by Diario Sur.
The proposal reiterates the agreement that all municipal groups supported in January 2025, when the council asked the central Executive to begin drafting the project for a second connection with the A-7 within the municipality. More than a year and a half later, the Town Hall believes that insufficient progress has been made and formally reiterates the demand to the Ministry.
The motion, defended by the PP councillor and Andalusian parliamentarian Sandra Extremera, goes beyond requesting the drafting of the project. The Town Hall demands that the future link be classified as a "priority action", have a specific budget allocation in the upcoming General State Budgets, and be included among the planned investments for the State Road Network in Andalusia.
The agreement also includes a temporal demand: the council requests that the Ministry present a timeline within a maximum of three months outlining the deadlines for drafting, processing, and executing the infrastructure. The text promoted by the local government, which has an absolute majority from the PP, speaks of "more than a year of absolute institutional silence" since the previous plenary statement.
The Town Hall will forward the new agreement to the Presidency of the Government, the Ministry of Transport, the Government Sub-delegation in Málaga, and the Andalusian Government Delegation in the province. It will also send it to the parliamentary groups in Congress and the Senate, the Málaga Provincial Council, and the Spanish Federation of Municipalities and Provinces.
The request is not new. In January 2025, the council already unanimously approved demanding a second exit from the A-7 and reminded that the municipality has only one direct link to the motorway, despite the demographic and urban growth of recent decades. During the summer months, the floating population surges, and traffic congestion increases on the old N-340, especially at the connections between the coast and the existing access.
The debate over the location of the new link has been ongoing for years. The Town Hall commissioned a study in 2019 from civil engineer Juan José Soto of ICS Consultores del Sur, which proposed an alternative connection near the Güi River in El Morche. That document was forwarded to the State Road Demarcation, although its officials indicated that the project should be developed by the General Directorate of Roads since it concerns state-owned infrastructure.
The municipal argument is that the current access serves not only Torrox Costa but also the historic centre and movements from Cómpeta, while a significant portion of residential and tourist growth has developed along the approximately nine kilometres of coastline. The PP even compared Torrox's situation to that of Rincón de la Victoria, which has several accesses to the A-7 compared to the single Torrox link.
The PSOE of Torrox has supported the need to improve the connection but has accused the local PP government of using this demand as a "political confrontation weapon". The socialist spokesperson, Mari Nieves Ramírez, recalled that her group already proposed in 2023 to advance a new connection with the motorway and has called for more management, meetings, and administrative follow-up. "We want the El Morche motorway exit, and we want work to be done to achieve it," she stated, although she criticised that a plenary motion is insufficient to promote a project of this magnitude.
In addition to the link, the council unanimously approved a proposal from the PSOE to strengthen prevention and response to forest fires, as well as two initiatives from IU: one to improve preventive measures in scattered housing areas near forest land and another to request the Junta de Andalucía to create a second ITV station in Torrox in the Axarquía. A socialist proposal to modify the budget and acquire properties of general interest was rejected with the votes of the PP, the abstention of Vox, and the support of PSOE and IU.
