Marbella Town Hall has sent a letter to the State Road Demarcation in Eastern Andalusia requesting the temporary reopening of the A-7 links to Golden Beach, in Las Chapas, which were closed a week ago without notice or alternatives.
Marbella Town Hall has formally requested the Ministry of Transport and Sustainable Mobility to temporarily reopen the access points of the A-7 motorway to the Golden Beach area, in Las Chapas. The request, as reported by Diario Sur, has been sent to the State Road Demarcation in Eastern Andalusia and will remain until alternative entry and exit routes are operational.
The Council reported the sending of the letter in the Local Government Board. The letter warns of the "risk to road safety" caused by the closure of the links located between the kilometre points 190+700 and 191+500 of the motorway, and the inconveniences it is causing to residents and users.
The technical measure was planned since 2020 and was approved in January of this year. Its aim is to reorganise access points that are even made from a stop sign. What has led to complaints from the Town Hall, residents, and workers in the area is that the closure was implemented a week ago "without prior notice" and without alternative mobility options.
"We share the need to advance in the definitive reorganisation of access to the sectors of this area of Las Chapas, and it is a long-demanded action that will improve its functionality and mobility," reasoned the government team's spokesperson, Félix Romero.
Romero added that the development of this work "must be coordinated with the actual state of execution of the alternatives to ensure the safety of users and the accessibility of residents".
The municipal letter states that the closure has occurred "prematurely in relation to the ongoing works" and emphasises that prior information was not provided to the Town Hall or residents to prepare an alternative. The spokesperson pointed out that the situation particularly affects residents of the area and, due to its impact on traffic, has repercussions in other parts of the municipality.
The Town Hall also warns of the lack of adequate signage regarding the closure, alternative routes, and traffic changes. This absence is causing unexpected manoeuvres by drivers, which, in their view, generates "a risk to road safety both on the A-7 itself and in the affected residential areas".
The request for temporary reopening is based on the principle of proportionality and the general interest, in order to avoid unnecessary harm to residents, users, and visitors. The councillor has argued that the measure would allow for "the advancement of a necessary action for the area while protecting the mobility of citizens", and emphasised that supramunicipal administrations must involve town halls "when their actions may directly affect traffic, accessibility, and safety".
The access points will remain closed until the Ministry responds to the municipal request or the works to condition the alternative routes are completed.
