The Unicaja Foundation has published 'Enrique Fuentes Quintana In Memoriam', a work that reviews the figure of the economist and politician who designed the Moncloa Pacts in 1977. The book compiles the lectures from a day organised in 2024 by the Academy of Social Sciences and the Environment of Andalusia.
The Unicaja Foundation has released the book 'Enrique Fuentes Quintana In Memoriam, on the centenary of his birth', a work that brings closer the figure and legacy of the economist and politician, as reported by Diario Sur. The volume gathers the lectures of professors, researchers, and experts who participated in a day organised in 2024 by the Academy of Social Sciences and the Environment of Andalusia.
At the presentation event, the general director of the Unicaja Foundation, Sergio Corral, and the president of the Academy of Social Sciences and the Environment of Andalusia, Antonio Pascual, spoke alongside several authors of the publication: the president of the Unicaja Foundation and professor of Public Finance, José Manuel Domínguez; the professor of Applied Economics Miguel González; the professor of Economics Manuel Martín; and the professor of Public Finance Braulio Medel.
The work, published by the Foundation's Publications Service, analyses aspects such as economic policy, tax reform, economic thought, the financial system, sustainable development, social equity, and resource management. Among the signatories of the texts are Antonio Pascual, Braulio Medel (University of Malaga), Carmen Vargas (University of Seville), Francisco Javier Lasarte (Pablo de Olavide University), José Carlos Gómez, José M. Domínguez (University of Malaga), Manuel Lagares (University of Alcalá de Henares), Manuel Martín, and Miguel González (University of Granada), Rocío Sánchez (University of Seville), and Victorio Valle (UNED). The book also includes the original text of the seminar that Fuentes Quintana directed in 1948 at the Faculty of Law of the University of Seville.
Enrique Fuentes Quintana, economist, university professor, and politician, played a decisive role in the economic transformation during the Transition. As the architect of the Moncloa Pacts in 1977, he articulated an agreement between political and social forces to curb inflation, organise public finances, and lay the foundations for a more open economy. He held, among other positions, the vice-presidency of Economic Affairs.
A convinced European, he advocated for a structural view of the economy and pushed for deep reforms. He contributed to consolidating economic thought in Spain, trained several generations of economists, and promoted debate through publications such as Información Comercial Española. His figure was key in three determining processes for the consolidation of democracy: the transformation of the tax regime, convergence with the European Union, and the reformulation of the socioeconomic value of the former savings banks.
