Maritime Rescue recovered the body of a man in a wetsuit and float 11 miles southeast of Estepona on Tuesday night. This is the fourth similar finding in Málaga waters in less than a month.
A man in a wetsuit and float was located on Tuesday night approximately 11 miles southeast of Estepona, according to Diario Sur. This is the fourth body found in the waters of the province of Málaga in similar circumstances, all attributed to migrants attempting to swim to the Peninsula.
The alert was received by the Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre in Tarifa through a call from a recreational vessel navigating the area. The Helimer 222 helicopter, which was conducting an exercise nearby, and the Salvamar Gadir were mobilised, with the latter rescuing the body and transporting it to the port of Estepona.
Agents from the Guardia Civil took charge of the custody of the body and the judicial proceedings. Sources close to the case indicate that it may have been in the water for some time due to the state of decomposition it was in.
The previous finding occurred on Saturday 26 September, when a patrol boat from the Maritime Service of the Guardia Civil discovered another body at sea in an advanced state of decomposition, missing parts such as the head. It was transported to the port of Fuengirola and then to the Institute of Legal Medicine of Málaga for an autopsy.
Days earlier, in the middle of the month, two other findings were recorded in just 24 hours. The first was located drifting along the western coastline on the afternoon of 15 September and was taken to the port of Fuengirola. The following day, 16 September, another body appeared in the area of Nerja, transported to the port of Vélez-Málaga. This victim was wearing a wetsuit, fins, and a float, and among their belongings were several mobile phones and Moroccan coins.
