Two people navigating an inflatable kayak were rescued at Campo de Golf-San Julián beach in the Málaga district of Churriana. Emergency services acted after receiving the alert on Friday afternoon.
Two individuals adrift in an inflatable kayak at Campo de Golf-San Julián beach in the Churriana district were attended to by Málaga firefighters and Maritime Rescue. The incident occurred on the afternoon of last Friday, according to the Security Area of the Málaga City Council.
Both individuals managed to get out of the water by themselves before the rescue teams arrived. However, the firefighters deployed a safety operation in the area to prevent other bathers from being affected by the situation.
During the intervention, preventive and escorting measures were carried out from the firefighters' boat to other users present on the beach at that time. The aim was to avoid further incidents while the rescue was underway.
A rescue van and a lightweight vehicle from the Central Fire Station in Martiricos and the Carretera de Cádiz were dispatched to the scene. These vehicles reinforced the safety measures deployed at the Málaga beach during Friday afternoon.
This incident occurs amid a drowning prevention campaign launched by the Junta de Andalucía. The Andalusian Government delegate, Patricia Navarro, presented the campaign 'Don't wait to see it in the news, in the water neglects are emergencies' last Thursday in Algarrobo Costa, emphasising the importance of exercising caution at beaches, pools, and inland waters.
Navarro, accompanied by the mayor of Algarrobo, Natacha Rivas, and the provincial head of Emergencies 112 and Civil Protection, Ana Celia González, highlighted that many emergencies in the water can be avoided with preventive measures. "When we see news of this kind, the tragedy has already occurred. We work to arrive earlier," she stated.
According to data from Emergencies 112, there have been 15 fatalities related to incidents in aquatic environments in the province of Málaga so far this year. Of these, 13 have occurred since June. Out of the 15, 12 are classified as accidental drownings, while the rest are under investigation.
The rescue on Friday in Churriana underscores the importance of prevention. Authorities remind that inflatable kayaks and other floating devices can be dangerous if not used with caution, especially in areas with currents or wind.
The Málaga City Council has reiterated the need to follow safety recommendations at beaches, such as not drifting away from the shore with non-certified floating devices and respecting warning flags.
